Difficult mountain hike with exposed sections and steep terrain. Good orientation, sure-footedness, and freedom from dizziness are required.
This mountain hike leads from El Chorro (municipality of Álora, province of Málaga) to the highest point of the Sierra de Huma. The route runs mostly on marked hiking trails and forest roads. It starts at about 230 m above sea level at the El Chorro train station, a well-known access point to the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes region. From there, the path initially ascends on wide forest roads before transitioning to steeper, partly rocky mountain trails.
In the middle section, the route crosses karst landscapes with typical Mediterranean vegetation, including rosemary, kermes oak, and dwarf palm. The last 200 meters of elevation are on uneven but well-walkable rock surfaces. At the summit cross of Huma (1,191 m), there is a 360° panorama over the Sierra de las Nieves, the Guadalhorce valley, and the Embalse del Conde de Guadalhorce reservoir.
The descent initially follows the Llano de Cristóbal plateau, then continues via an old livestock trail facing west. Back in El Chorro, the tour ends again at the train station. The route is consistently not technically demanding but physically challenging due to the length, elevation difference (approx. 1,000 m), and the southern Spanish weather conditions.
