Grünstein surroundings
Combined with the ascent from Ehrwald the day before, there is hardly a better way to get to know the area around the Coburger Hut. A wild and romantic route through green and gray.
The route is often done in reverse, especially if you want to avoid a strenuous ascent through the Hell in the blazing sun.

Please especially observe the current conditions in early summer – Grünsteinscharte and Bieberwierer Scharte can be tricky with a lot of residual snow and without appropriate alpine experience.
The north side of Grünsteinscharte can be covered with snow well into high summer.
Absolutely avoid the rockfall zone below the Grießspitzen!
Tips and suggestions

Starting from the Coburger Hut, the trail gently ascends to the Bibwerwierer Scharte. We leave the path to Drachenkopf on the left and the one to Sonnenspitze on the right before reaching the notch between Schärten- and Sonnenspitze. The following descent is initially quite steep and sometimes unpleasant when wet before it flattens considerably after a crossing. Over a very long switchback you reach a junction where the path continues to the left towards Marienbergjoch. A crossing through the forest below the Wamperter Schrofens follows – always with the Sonnenspitze at your back – before reaching the area of the former mining in the region. Here a short detour to Schachtkopf is worth it, whose view over the entire Ehrwald valley basin and its mountains is unmatched.
Now the west flank of the Wamperter Schrofens is crossed at almost the same elevation until you reach the end of the Jubiläumssteig. From there you go left over a forest road past the Mareinberg chapel up to the Marienbergjoch, where you then turn left onto a trail. This leads moderately steeply up to the Hölltörl, where once again a detour to a viewpoint, the Höllkopf, is recommended – the view of Grünstein and the Central Alps is breathtaking.
Next follows the descent into the Hell. Since you want to ascend back to Grünsteinscharte left around the mountain, slight path traces that practically cut the corner tempt you to shortcut. Here you should be aware of the rockfall danger of the brittle mountain range. The marked and maintained path first descends until you reach the Hell with its dwarf pines. Only there do you turn left towards the Höllreise and climb over an almost endless slope up to Grünsteinscharte.
The notch itself offers a wild scenery: rock towers, walls, and needles... Although it is hard to believe at first, there is a bicycle placed on one of the rock needles by a mountain guide. It is rumored that because of a dispute with his wife, he moved her mountain bike up there. The descent is considerably steeper compared to the previous paths and requires surefootedness. At this point, be sure to follow the new routing that became necessary due to a rockslide in 2012. The old path crossing under the walls of Grießspitzen is heavily threatened by rockfall!
After the scree section, follow the signs towards Coburger Hut. The path then crosses a slope and descends over the so-called Soccer Meadow back down to Drachensee and Coburger Hut.
