From Mürzzuschlag to Stuhleck—In the Footsteps of the Ski Pioneers
1892—the year skiing was born in the Alps. And right here in the far east, in the Fischbach Alps, three mountaineers played a decisive role in its birth. Led by Toni Schruf, a hotelier from Mürzzuschlag who had skis specially shipped from Norway, these three alpinists climbed the 1,782-meter-high Stuhleck—the first Alpine peak to be ascended on skis. That is why the first Workers’ Olympics (the precursor to the Winter Olympics) took place here in 1904. Mürzzuschlag is also home to the world’s largest collection of winter sports equipment, housed in the International FIS Winter Sports Museum (Information hotline: +43/(0)3852/3504).
And that’s also why Toni Schruf once said, “Davos is Davos, but Mürzzuschlag is something else too!” The hike in the footsteps of the first “ski tourers” begins at the Stadtpfarrkirche 01 and leads first along Wiener Straße, past the Winter Sports Museum and the Kunsthaus, to Stuhleckstraße. Follow this street to the Auersbachgraben, but here, turn left and head uphill toward Schöneben 02 . Continue to the Bettelbauer 03 —once an important base for all “ski tourers,” though unfortunately no longer in operation—and then along a forest path to the Hochreith Hunting Lodge 04 . At the Hochreith hunting lodge, either follow the farm road or take the (steeper) path through the forest via a trail (partially poorly marked) to the Schwarzriegelalm 05 . Cross the now open alpine meadows up to the main ridge of the Fischbach Alps, which is reached at the Schwarzriegel (1,593 m) 06 . Turn northeast to reach the summit of the Stuhleck 07 , where the Alois-Günther-Haus is located.
