Ascent:
From the parking lot, we cross the road and follow the signs to Stepbergalm via Kreuzweg/Kramer on the wide service road. After about 15 minutes, the path turns right (signposted) and leads us over a steep grassy slope into the forest. The trail now takes us for just under two hours relatively steeply through the forest, over the Kögerlaine and onto a saddle. From the saddle, it then goes quite comfortably over to Stepbergalm.
From the Alm, the onward route is already clearly visible. While it goes right to Kramer and left further to Hoher Ziegspitz, we walk straight up the increasingly steep grassy slope to the edge of the forest.
From here, the narrow path winds steeply through the forest up to the ridge. We now keep left and walk comfortably over the ridge towards the summit.
Descent:
Down to Stepbergalm, return the way you came up, and from there follow the signs back to Garmisch via the Gelbes Gewänd. After about 1.5 hours, the trail merges into a service road which we follow further downhill.
Soon after, another forest road joins our path from the right, and at the next opportunity, we turn left (not signposted). The path takes us back to our ascent route in about 15 minutes and further down to the parking lot.
Directions
Coming from the A95, drive through Oberau and immediately after the tunnel turn right in the direction of Fernpass/Reutte. In Garmisch, before the first bridge, turn right and follow the signs to the animal shelter. Pass the animal shelter, drive through the steep S-curve, and then park on the right side.Parking
