A somewhat challenging and exciting hike along barely marked trails from Reichenau an der Rax to the unspectacular Feichtaberg on 1 May 2021.

The route follows narrow paths that are occasionally marked with red dots and cairns for orientation from the middle section onwards. From the flat section before the summit, the path continues between cut-out tree masts.
Author’s recommendation
If possible, park below the Thalhof on the right-hand side of the road in a suitable place to walk down to the access point from there or from the last car park in Reichenau. If open, go to the Knofeleben hut. If you are retracing the hike, add a few more cairns and do not leave the clearly visible ascent path so that the climbing tracks become more pronounced.

From the Thalhofstrasse in front of the houses on the left-hand side of the meadow below the Thalhof, a clearly visible path (initially the Kaisersteig) leads up the ridge of the Haaberberg. When crossing the forest roads, you pass a sign pointing to the Kaisersteig. Continue upwards on a forest path and in the forest to a steep, long meadow with a high stand. At a tree with a salt lick, the trail leads up to the left below a rock face into the steep, sparse forest. Follow the mostly clearly visible tracks with the help of cairns and red dot markings to a small rocky ridge with gully crossings. There are also fallen trees along the way. I have rebuilt some of the destroyed cairns. At an altitude of around 1500 metres, there is a small section of meadow which you have to cross to the left above the rocks. You soon reach the summit, which is marked with a cairn. Continue in a northerly direction to the forest path that comes over from the Mittagstein. Follow this across meadows and woodland along farm tracks to Knofeleben. Between Feichtaberg and Knofeleben, there are also some shorter descent options for those familiar with the terrain via forest roads and wooded gullies in the direction of Mitterberggraben, as well as the trail down along the Schnalzwand. From the Knofeleben, first follow the markings down to the forest road and then take this road above the Mitterberggraben in the direction of the Schnalzwand. At the left-hand bend, take the lower Schnalwandjagdsteig down into the Mitterberggraben, past the Rameskirchnerhöhle, the demolished shelter, through the Eng. Continue along the markings until you reach a path that clearly leads down to the right to Scheiterplatz. Descend this in the direction of Thalhof and back to the starting point.
