We start at the red rest bench just before Unterellmau. If starting from Fuschl am See, you hike along the paved Ellmaustraße to get here. A dirt and root-covered hiking path crosses the wooded south flank relatively steeply, where two rocky-craggy spots are climbed. In a left bend we reach a wide, stony cart track via the root path, which we follow steeply down into a gorge. Now in a right bend through the gorge, then on a wider hiking path to the summit ridge. We turn left and follow the moderately steep rooty path. After a short flattening, there is a double hairpin turn to the highest point of the west summit. Descending slightly in the same direction, the summit cross is reached shortly at the upper end of a clear-cut. It offers a beautiful view down to Lake Fuschl. If you want to climb to the highest point of the Ellmaustein (east summit), you have to ascend almost pathlessly on the wooded summit dome from the flattening on trail traces (not really worthwhile!).
Descent along the ascent route.
