The Drachenweg is marked with a dragon symbol. With a bit of luck and quiet behavior, you can observe deer and stags, but also (in steep terrain) mouflons and chamois. In winter and early spring, many snowroses bloom here; in early summer, the stemless gentian blooms.Roadbook
The starting point of the route is the Gasthof Drachenwand in St. Lorenz (486 m). From here, the path leads southeast and after about 50 m you keep right. A sign points to the Thekla Chapel and you follow the path through a wooded area slightly uphill (Path No. 12/ red-white-red). Keeping slightly left, you pass two junctions and finally reach the Thekla Chapel (approx. 540 m). Thekla was a martyr who dedicated her life to faith.
Over a small footbridge, you cross the Klausbach, whose water here partly flows underground and only surfaces again near the lake. Shortly afterwards you come to a fork: right leads to the summit of the Drachenwand (1060 m, Path No. 12a). Inside the Drachenwand are the Klausbach Caves. This huge cave system hosts stalactites and a lake. Unfortunately, the cave system is not accessible. However, you continue straight ahead on the path (Path No. 12) and ascend to the Almkogel (1030 m). The view over the Salzkammergut is magnificent!
The route continues along a forest road (Path No. 13) to the lovely Eibensee (952 m), which invites you to a cool bath on hot summer days. Along the Eibensee stream, you head downhill towards Fuschl am See (670 m). At the outskirts, follow the trail to the right towards the Wartenfels ruins (665 m). Soon you reach a crossroads: Path No. 10 leads uphill to the Wartenfels ruins (924 m, with a place to stop for food and drink). The ascent to the castle is very worthwhile because of the magnificent panoramic view and the sun terrace!
If you still feel fit, you can reach the Schober summit (1328 m) from the Wartenfels ruins. This climb is secured with steel cables. At the Schober south ridge, there are climbing routes of various difficulty levels. From the ruins, a beautiful forest path (Path No. 11) leads downhill at the foot of the Schober and the Drachenwand back to the starting point.
