The Dolomitensteig is a challenging route in the beautiful nature of the Stodertal, in the middle of the Totes Gebirge. At first, you walk comfortably in forests and alpine pastures, but the terrain quickly changes to rocky paths typical of the Totes Gebirge. A challenge rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, including the highest mountain entirely in Upper Austria, the Großer Priel.
Author’s recommendation
The Stodertal is one of the most beautiful places in Upper Austria. Since the route is relatively short, it is recommended to visit the nearby area (Schiederweiher) and let the region have an effect on you.

Roadbook
From the parking lot of the Baumschlagerreith guesthouse, the route leads up into the forest via a forest road. It ascends in steep switchbacks until after about an hour we reach the first viewpoint. Now we follow the path along the flank of the mountain for a short stretch until we reach the Hochsteinalm. A quarter of an hour later, we arrive at the Lögerhütte. Now the actual Dolomitensteig begins. The following hour leads along a path that requires absolute surefootedness and a head for heights, over gravel and stone, repeatedly descending and often secured with wire ropes. After half an hour, you reach a Gumpen cascade, which offers fresh water and a larger area for resting. Shortly afterward, the difficult part of the route is over. It becomes green again. The path leads into the forest and descends slightly again. The forest ends, and we follow a scree field for the last three-quarters of an hour back to Baumschlagerreith.
Just before the guesthouse, a detour to the source of the Steyr river is possible, but unfortunately not very spectacular, as the Steyr simply flows out of the ground.
