This very long hut crossing runs in the middle section over wide forest roads.

The destination, however, is really unique: The rustic Tegernseer hut lies on a narrow mountain saddle between Ross- and Buchstein, which (assuming good surefootedness) can be climbed after a short hut rest.

    Author’s recommendation

This hut crossing can be part of a multi-day pre-Alpine traverse, which in the following days could continue via Kreuth into the Mangfall mountains.

    Roadbook

From the Brauneck summit house, first descend south to the top station of the cable car and continue down to Braunackalm. From here, the path leads partly through wooded areas southwards to the saddle west of Kotigen Stein. At the fork there, keep left and descend east into the basin of Kotalm, where you either descend further east towards Wegscheid (if the grass is low and dry) via the ski slope clearing or along a cart track.

Shortly after the (only open in winter) Müilchhäusl, at a fork, turn right and follow a forest road that eventually leads along the Murbach stream to the Wegscheid district. Here, turn right and then cross the Isar to the left over a wide road bridge. On the other side, you can hike a bit south parallel to the B13 road and then turn left onto a dirt path leading to the "Holz" farm. From there, a forest road leads south to the hiking parking lot at the edge of the forest east of the Fleck district.

Here follow the signs "Schönberg" or "Mariaeck". After a few hundred meters, an alternative ascent to Schönberg branches left. However, in my opinion, it is better to continue straight on the wide forest road, mostly over open meadows, further southeast. After 1.3 km you reach a large crossroads (shortly after the Schmickerstein forest hill on the right).

Shortly before this, our ascent to Schönberg branches left (just before a small creek) and leads east up to a forest road. Follow this a short distance straight and then turn right onto a clear, soon also stony footpath that continues eastwards and uphill through the forest. Soon the path meets another forest road, follows it for a while, then turns right off it again, leading in the same direction out of the forest into a lovely little meadow valley. Over this you ascend directly to the Mariaeck forest saddle.

There follow the signs to the Tegernseer hut (optionally, a detour south to Schönberg is possible) and thus cross in sparse forest at the same elevation on the northeast side of Schönberg towards the southeast. The path crosses two forest areas and one alpine meadow and then meets an alpine road that leads directly to the Roßsteinalm.

From there, continue a bit along a ridge towards the south and then follow the signs to the Tegernseer hut by turning left, finally ascending through larch terrain, becoming stony towards the mountain shelter located between Ross- and Buchstein.
