In Artiga de Lin three valleys converge. One of them is the Barranc dera Ribera Valley which leads to the Còth deth Hòro with its magnificent hanging lake on a plateau above the Val d’Aran; from the lake there are magnificent views of Aran on one side and the Aneto massif on the other.

    Author’s recommendation

It is recommended to have prior experience in climbing sections equipped with steel cables. It is advisable to bring gloves to protect your hands from contact with the metal. In case of rain or dew moisture, it is highly recommended to use specific mountain soles in good condition, without worn-out tread. The use of trekking poles is very advisable both for ascent and descent as the terrain is demanding and the elevation changes are significant.

    Roadbook

We start the route at the Artiga de Lin Refuge, we walk a flat section until the ascent begins following a zigzagging trail that leads us to a rocky outcrop section where we will find some cables that facilitate the climb; after this ascent the terrain becomes less steep and we reach the Lac deth Coth deth Hòro and continue to the pass of the same name. We skirt the Malh dera Artiga and return via the Aranesis pass, whose descent will require good leg strength and trekking poles as this first section is quite steep, we reach the lac deth Pois and continue the descent over a rockier section until reaching the final plateau and thus complete the circular route at the refuge.

    Equipment

MOUNTAIN FOOTWEAR (mountain boot or sneaker)

For each stage and depending on the condition of the terrain and/or weather forecast, the recommended type of footwear height (boot or sneaker) will be indicated.

    CLOTHING

As the routes run through mid and high mountain environments, and the climate can change quickly and drastically, WE RECOMMEND regardless of the route difficulty the following items:

    • Long pants. If the route characteristics along with expected weather allow the use of shorts, carry a piece to cover the rest of the leg exposed, either a second pair of pants or long tights in the backpack in all cases.
    • First body layer (short-sleeved breathable and quick-drying T-shirt) (tank tops are not recommended due to being unsuitable for carrying backpacks).
    • Second body layer, thermal layer consisting of a thin/medium fleece or long-sleeved thermal shirt.
    • Third body layer, waterproof rain jacket and windbreaker with hood.
    • Cap / Buff or similar for sun protection.

Even if some of these garments are not used during the itinerary, it is recommended to carry them in the backpack throughout the entire route and be ready to use them in case of weather changes or any unforeseen event to avoid hypothermia in case of sudden weather change or incident prolonging the day.

    MINIMUM BACKPACK CONTENT

    • 20-30 liter mountain backpack with waterproof cover.
    • Personal first aid kit with special medications if needed.
    • Water (minimum 2 liters).
    • Food (according to route duration).
    • Sunscreen, cap/hat, and sunglasses.
    • Identification documents and charged phone.
