This magnificent circular route leads over a scenic east-west ridge to one of the best viewpoint summits in the Ammergau Alps. The partly steep descent is also rewarded with a nice place to stop for refreshment.

Not without reason, the nearly 1900 m high Notkarspitze is considered one of the most beautiful circular routes in the Ammergau Alps. The initially gentle ascent along a forest ridge is followed by a short steeper section to Ochsensitz, which is the highlight of the tour: with slight ups and downs, you follow a long ridge to the summit slope. The descent requires surefootedness but offers further scenic variety in the vast Notkar before it goes steeply down to the valley floor.
Author’s recommendation
After the steep descent, you should stop at the very nice Ettaler Mühle (no day off). It can be reached with a short detour north from the fork at the forest edge described in the route instructions. Those who arrived by public transport can directly follow the road after the stop to the "Zieglerhof" bus stop on the main road Ettal – Oberammergau.

From the hiking car park at Ettaler Sattel, follow a forest road south. At the next T-junction, turn left. Continue on a forest road with a slight uphill. Where it makes a distinctive curve, a sign "Notkarspitze" points to the right, and from there you ascend along a clear path with a pleasant incline through beautiful mixed mountain forest. After a while, this becomes more open, but the ascent also becomes somewhat steeper at times. Only when you reach the inconspicuous Ochsensitz at 1515 meters does the terrain become noticeably flatter. Without orientation difficulties, follow the ridge further west and ascend once more somewhat steeper to Ziegelspitz (1719 m). The path becomes flatter again and bypasses an upswing on the ridge between Ziegelspitz and Notkarspitze on its south side. You descend into a saddle to then tackle the last meters of ascent over the south-exposed summit slope.
For the descent, follow the north-descending summit ridge (at a junction in the dwarf pine terrain, do not go right but half-left!) to soon turn east into the large, north-exposed Notkar. Initially, it goes down steeper there, then the terrain becomes increasingly flat as you cross the beautiful mountain basin northeastward and roughly at the same height to the start of the mountain forest. After a flat traverse, the path becomes quite steep. When wet, surefootedness is required here. However, fairly new wire rope protections help over the steepest sections. Shortly after it flattens again, you will already reach a forest road leading to the forest edge at the valley floor. At the fork there, keep right following the signpost (Ettaler Sattel) to hike east on nice footpaths and forest roads, always along the forest edge or within the forest. Finally, you reach the T-junction at the start of the route, from where it is just a short distance back to the hiking car park.
