With a prominence of 1212 m, the Cima de' Piazzi is one of the most striking mountains in the Alps. Nevertheless, the main summit of the Livigno Alps is little known outside Lombardy – probably due to its location between the higher Bernina and Ortler groups. However, locals climb the summit surprisingly often in midsummer despite the length of the route – the goal is therefore not as exclusive as one might assume. The steep north face of Cima de' Piazzi is glaciated and is especially approached as a ski mountaineering tour in spring. The normal route from Passo di Verva is usually ice- and snow-free in midsummer; the firn remnants on the southwest flank have disappeared. Thus, the ascent is also feasible for alpine-experienced and fit mountain hikers – provided they bring stamina for over 1800 meters of ascent in one day, as there are neither huts nor bivouacs along the route. The best starting point for the route is Rifugio Eita, from which Passo di Verva can be reached fastest.
