From the parking lot, head south and immediately turn over a bridge. From there, off-trail through forest and underbrush up to the Wannenkopf. Over the ridge to the Güntlespitze. From here, a detour to the Üntschenspitze can be made. Highly recommended. Now over the ridge on a well-trodden path over to the Derrenalpe. Both from here and from the Middle Spitalalpe, the return path can be chosen via the Derrenbachtal.
Author’s recommendation
The route deviates from the norms due to the off-trail ascent, but this is exactly what makes it interesting.

Safety information
Good fitness required, surefootedness necessary for off-trail areas and ridge paths. Sense of direction required.Roadbook
From the parking lot, go briefly in the direction of the Derrental. At the end of the parking lot, a bridge leads left over the stream. The path ends on a meadow with a barn. From here, go off-trail always along the ridge of the elevation between the Derrental and the Bärgunttal, mainly through forest, climbing upwards. This part is really challenging. You have to go under bushes and over fallen trees. In the upper area, we leave the forest and reach alpine pastures leading to the 1830 m high Wannenberg. Over a rocky ridge now with gentle ups and downs to the hiking path. At the first junction heading south, the path leads down to the Häfnerjoch at 1979 m, and then over the grassy ridge up to the Üntschenspitze at 2135 m. From here, there is a beautiful view into the rear Bregenzerwald. Return on the same path back to the junction. Now keeping left over the Güntlespitze at 2092 m on the ridge also interspersed with rocky outcrops and dwarf pines in the direction of Derrenalp and across alpine terrain to a hollow at about 1850 m. At the crossroads, go right down to the Derrenalpe at 1813 m. From here, you can climb back to Baad via two routes. One option is the path to the Derrenjoch and to the middle Spitalalpe with the further way to Baad. The other possibility is, at the Derrenalpe, to take the right fork and descend through the Derrental down to the parking lot.
