Ascent to Edelsberg (1624m) and Alpspitz (1575m) | Via Nesselburg ruin and root path
Easy and varied mountain hike to the Nesselwang summits Edelsberg and Alpspitz. The descent makes it a nice and extensive circular route.
The root path can also be bypassed via the forest road.
The Alpspitzbahn also offers the possibility to significantly shorten the tour.
The 1,575-meter-high Alpspitz is the northernmost mountain of the Allgäu Alps and the local mountain of Nesselwang. It is fully developed for tourism and can be very crowded on summer weekends. You can take the cable car almost to the summit or hike up the beautiful waterfall path.
Directly to the south of Alpspitz lies the 1,624-meter-high wooded Edelsberg. Its summit can be reached from the Alpspitzbahn mountain station or the Sportsheim across approximately 170 vertical meters in about half an hour without difficulty.

Ascent:
From the Alpspitzbahn parking lot, passing the hotel, we reach the start of the waterfall path. Here, there is the option to ascend directly to the Nesselburg ruin. However, we keep right to also visit the waterfall. This is reached after just a few minutes. Now it goes somewhat steeper uphill over numerous steps and bridges. About five minutes later, we reach a signpost pointing left to the Nesselburg ruin.
After about 200 meters, the ruin of Schildmauerburg is reached. We keep right as seen from the path and follow the signs “Untere Alm (private)”. Following the forest path and crossing a small piece of pasture, we find a signpost at the alm that points us back to the Edelsberg path. Soon we are back on the original path coming directly from the waterfall and now follow it towards Sportheim Böck. The path becomes much steeper here and resembles climbing stairs. At the end, we reach an intersection with a forest road. Here, one can choose the easier option via the forest road or follow the root path as we do.
This path is very steep and truly deserves the name “root path”. Difficulties should only occur in wet conditions.
After about 20 minutes, another forest road crosses. Going left, we follow the path for a few meters until on the right side the signpost for the remaining root path appears, which we also take.
The last short section to Sportheim Böck (mountain lodge) is done via a forest road. After that, we can already admire the entire panorama of the Tannheimer Mountains.
From Sportheim Böck, the wooded Edelsberg is clearly visible. Passing the Alpspitz kiosk, we continue to the saddle between Alpspitz and Edelsberg. The last quarter hour becomes even steeper before reaching the wooden cross of Edelsberg at 1,624 meters. Although the view is partially obstructed by trees, you get a deep insight into the Allgäu Alps and beyond. Back at the saddle to the north, above the saddle, lies the Alpspitz, our next destination. Be aware that the viewpoint is not the summit. From there, you have to walk a few meters further to the Alpspitz cross.
Descent:
To avoid retracing the ascent path, we decided to descend west towards Reichenbach.
After overcoming the first steeper meters on a clearly visible path descending from Alpspitz, the path gently leads downhill past a small hut. We stay on the ridge for quite some time, which seems to lead directly to Grüntensee. After just under half an hour, we turn right towards Bayerstetten. Forty-five minutes later, we stand before the first houses of Bayerstetten. Following the signage, we pass the summer toboggan run to the valley station of the Alpspitzbahn.
