Tip for summit climbers:
For the ascent of the Widderstein summit, sure-footedness, a head for heights, and mountain experience are required. You should also start very early. Using the ascent and descent gully with as little traffic as possible reduces the risk of falling rocks.

From the parking lot/bus stop in Baad/Kleinwalsertal, follow a wide path up to the Bärgunthütte (serviced). From here, the path narrows and steadily ascends.
Streams and watercourses are crossed until you reach the Hochalppass and have a clear view of the Lechtal Mountains. Moderately ascending past the Hochalpsee (here you have a view of the Kanisfluh in the Bregenzerwald and the Diedamskopf). At the height, the path leads to the Widdersteinhütte (serviced). Fields of purple gentians line the path. From the hut, you first walk a short stretch on more or less level ground until the slightly scree-covered descent leads down to the upper Gemstelhütte (serviced). From there, over the blasted path and the last elevation meters on scree down to the Hintere Gemstelalpe. Once in the Gemsteltal, hikers face the difficult choice of which hut to visit again. On a wide path, you walk out across the Gemstelboden to the bus stop. Alternatively, you can return to Baad on the signposted Großer Walserweg.
