A loop hike from Leutasch-Ahrn along a steep, root-strewn trail to the Arnplattenspitze. The return route leads back to the starting point via the Hoher Sattel. An often secluded summit experience with a fantastic panoramic view.

The trail heads directly into the forest from the starting point and climbs steeply up a root-covered path to the Zwirchenkopf, where the actual destination, the Arnplattenspitze, comes into view for the first time. The trail continues through the mountain pines to the Arnkopf and Weißlehenkopf.

Further along, the trail transitions to T4 terrain, and the actual ascent then leads over sections that are partially secured with ropes and slightly exposed terrain up to the summit. Keep in mind that this section must also be navigated on the descent on the way back.

There’s a good chance you’ll enjoy a solitary summit experience, as the mountain is rarely visited. This is puzzling, given the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

    Author’s recommendation

At the summit of the Arnplattenspitze, you have the option of taking the Arnspitz traverse, which means you don’t have to descend again but instead follow the ridge from the Middle Arnspitze to the Great Arnspitze and then back to the Hoher Sattel via the Arnspitz Hut. On this route, however, you’ll be hiking through T6 terrain all the way to the Große Arnspitze!

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate for me, which is why

    I

chose this less challenging—but still beautiful—alternative route.

    Safety information

On the first section, the steep, root-covered trail is very slippery—especially when wet—so I strongly recommend using hiking poles.

For the final section up to the summit, I would definitely recommend wearing a helmet.

I would only hike this loop in this direction and, due to the risk of slipping, would not recommend using the Wurzelsteig for the descent.

    Roadbook

The trail heads directly into the forest from the starting point and follows a root-covered path to the Zwirchenkopf, where the actual destination, the Arnplattenspitze, comes into view for the first time. Hiking poles are recommended, especially in wet conditions, due to the risk of slipping. The trail is very steep in places and well-marked throughout. Continue along the trail through the mountain pines to the Arnkopf and Weißlehenkopf. You’ll reach a signpost pointing directly toward the Arnplattenspitze and indicating a right turn for the later descent via the Hoher Sattel.

Further along, the trail transitions to T4 terrain. The actual ascent then leads over passages that are partially secured with ropes and slightly exposed terrain up to the summit. Keep in mind that this section must also be navigated on the descent on the way back.

For the descent into the valley toward the Hoher Sattel, I also recommend using hiking poles.

    The

steep descent over sticks, stones, and scree is very irregular in places.

Once in the valley, the final section follows a paved forest road back to the starting point.
