Loop that starts from the Ristorante Le Gobbie (a useful stop for breakfast or post-trekking lunch). Follow signs 41/33 (initially considered together, then they split), then continue on 33 to Passo degli Uncini. The trail here ascends moderately and is easily walkable. Passo degli Uncini deserves a stop and some photos (I suggest following trail 32 for a few meters to see some very striking rock formations).
At Passo degli Uncini starts CAI 143 which should be followed up to about 1420/30 meters elevation. Here you face the first part of Altissimo and the trail splits into an easier track and a purely alpine one (following the ridge line). The two tracks rejoin further ahead on the sub-summit.
The summit of Altissimo offers a fantastic view of all the Apuan Alps.
The loop then continues descending on the opposite side towards Passo del Vaso Tondo, then, after crossing the quarry, returns to the main road.
Here it is recommended to spend some energy not to return by the paved road, but to take the path that passes above the tunnel and leads to the Madonna dei Cavatori, a statue that looks over and seems to bless the whole Apuan valley.
Author’s recommendation
Be careful at the deviation on CAI 143 which splits into an alpine trail and another slightly easier one: the second path is really hard to find without GPS (the marks are very faded). It still involves a short ridge section, and then to the left you start to see some red (faded) marks.
The fact that the loop passes through a quarry makes it IMPASSABLE on working days.
