From the hiking center at Bergkurgarten Bayerisch Gmain, a well-developed path leads along the Wappbach up into the Alpgartental. Shortly after a bridge, the Alpgarten circular route branches off to the right and leads back into the valley. Here the Alpgartensteig leads upwards to the left. In the naturally formed valley basin of the Alpgarten, snowfields remain until summer. Chamois are often observed here, living undisturbed. Above the tree line follows the most difficult part of the ascent. Partially secured, the path leads over numerous ladders and steps up a steep ridge and above through rocky terrain. Just below the summit, the narrow path crosses a pine-covered slope to the right to the ascent to Hochschlegel from the Schlegelmulde. From here, the summit (1688 m) with splendid views is reached in 10 minutes. Descent is the same as the ascent or by the Predigtstuhlbahn.

Train/BLB:S3/S4 Berchtesgaden <> Freilassing: Exit Bayerisch Gmain, from the station forecourt go straight ahead on Obere Bahnhofsstraße to the junction with Lattenbergstraße. Cross the street and go 30 meters to the right towards the former Lattenbergstüberl and then turn left into Alpentalstraße. Follow the street to its end at the hiking center.
BUS:
Bus 180 / Bad Reichenhall <> Salzburg and Bus 841 Bad Reichenhall <> Jennerbahn: Exit Bayerisch Gmain Bridge
Cross the railway bridge and follow Lattenbergstraße until you turn right into Alpentalstraße at the former Lattenbergstüberl. Follow the street to its end at the hiking center.

From Munich/Salzburg/Lofer/Inzell:Drive to Bad Reichenhall. Follow B20 or B21 until the Bad Reichenhall city center exit. Follow the B20 signs towards Berchtesgaden. Leave Bad Reichenhall and continue 900 m on B20. At the entrance to Bayerisch Gmain, turn left and cross the railway bridge, then follow Lattenbergstraße until you turn right into Alpentalstraße at the former Lattenbergstüberl. Follow the street to its end at the hiking center.
From Berchtesgaden/Großgmain:
Follow B20 until just before the town exit near the shopping market (right side), turn left and cross the railway bridge to Lattenbergstraße. Follow the road until you turn right into Alpentalstraße at the former Lattenbergstüberl. Follow the street to its end at the hiking center.
