Author’s recommendation
An additional walk around the mountain inn Bleckenau through the namesake high plateau, where you can find, for example, a hollow sycamore, is especially worthwhile for families.

Roadbook
After the ascent with the Tegelbergbahn, your hike begins on the Ahornreitweg nature trail – a historic bridle path with impressive views into the valley. The path leads you on an alpine trail through the impressive mountain landscape to the Branderfleck. From there, follow the gently descending, well-developed bridle path in wide bends to the Bleckenau forest road, where the nature trail ends.
A short climb of about ten minutes takes you to the Bleckenau mountain inn. There you can take a well-deserved break, refresh yourself and enjoy the alpine atmosphere. The return route leads optionally via Neuschwanstein Castle back to the Tegelbergbahn valley station – or you take the bus from Bleckenau to Hohenschwangau. From the afternoon, the Bleckenau bus also runs directly to the Tegelbergbahn valley station, your starting point.
The Ahornreitweg was created around 1850 by order of King Maximilian II. The aim was to provide the king and his entourage with as comfortable access as possible to the royal hunting grounds and the hunting lodge on the Tegelberg. Along the way, numerous display panels convey exciting insights into the geology and ecology of the region: you will learn interesting facts about the history of the mountain forest, the interaction of tree death and bark beetles, as well as the diverse flora and fauna – from Alpine salamanders to eagles.
Impressive avalanche traces carved into the rock testify to the powerful natural forces that have shaped this landscape – and that will continue to change it in the future. Especially in the summer months, even some rugged mountain slopes surprise with a colorful bloom of gentians, alpine roses, and numerous other native plants.
