Selected alternatives for you
A bold rocky peak here, a broad mountain ridge there ... Just by thinking about the topography of these disparate neighbours, it becomes clear that the combination of the two makes for an extremely varied mountain tour.

Most Aggenstein mountaineers don't bother with summits and give the Breitenberg a wide berth, as it is also approached from the cable car mountain station by a comparatively large number of mountain tourists. But don't let this put you off, because after the summit house at the latest, you have an extremely lonely descent ahead of you.

    Author’s recommendation

Due to the north-facing exposure, the ascent to the Kissinger Hütte should not be tackled too early in the year.

    Safety information

Good surefootedness is required on the summit ascent to the Aggenstein.

    Roadbook

From the car park, turn right past the valley station to the children's playground where there is a sign for Aggenstein via Reichenbachklamm. Walk across a meadow to a wide footpath and then turn left. You come to a tarmac path and turn left again to two signposts. Pass the first one and shortly afterwards follow the signs to the right in the direction of Reichenbachklamm. Initially still on a track, you reach an old hay barn where you turn right onto a meadow path that leads gently uphill towards the gorge. Back in the forest, follow a forest path straight ahead for a short distance and then turn right to follow a narrow footpath. This soon leads away from the stream in a serpentine ascent and then soon follows it parallel to it again above. This is followed by a short section secured by a wire rope, then a side stream is crossed again on a flatter path before you reach the start of the actual, deeply incised gorge. Here too, the path remains to the right above the gorge and then leads to the right to a wide forest road. Cross this to follow a stony track uphill. This takes you to a wide alpine pasture where you can already see the Aggenstein towering in front of you. Here you follow a wide road to the right, pass a lift cabin and keep left at the next fork. Initially still on a carriage road, then on a footpath, the route becomes increasingly steeper as you approach a wide steep slope. The path leads to the left into a mountain basin, where it flattens out briefly and then leads again in steeper hairpin bends first to the right, then to the left to the other side of the mountain ridge. Here you turn right and walk flat to the nearby Bad Kissinger Hütte.
You pass it on the right and continue westwards, initially on a flat path. Finally, the path becomes increasingly steeper up to a mountain saddle where there is a fork in the path. Here, follow the Aggenstein signs to the left and you will come to the start of a long iron chain that makes the rocky ascent (you will need to use your hands) to the 1985 metre high summit of the Aggenstein easier.

To continue, first descend to the fork below the summit and then follow the Breitenberg sign to the north. The trail descends via many hairpin bends to the wide meadow saddle between Aggenstein and Breitenberg. From there, you hike uphill again to the north-west on a wide road to the mountain station of the chairlift and from there on a stony track up to the summit house on the Breitenberg, where you can take a longer break.

Then follow a narrow mountain path that now follows the Breitenberg ridge down to the west. After a while, the trail descends a little into the southern flank before turning northwards and leading down over an old windthrow area into the northern flank of the Breitenberg. Without any difficulties in finding your bearings, the descent is pleasant and crosses a carriage road. Finally, you reach a forest road and follow it down to the valley floor.

Once you reach the valley road, you have three options:
1: Either hitch a ride back to Pfronten-Steinach.
2: Follow the road eastwards to the Fallmühle bus stop and see when the next bus leaves (refreshments available at the Fallmühle until then).
3: Walk back to the starting point by following the road that leads south of the Steinacher Ache to Pfronten-Steinach and via the Alpengarten to the Breitenbergbahn cable car.

Das weiß ich leider auch nicht. Meine Wegbeschreibung verfolgt ja den Abstieg nach Westen. Am Besten beim Hüttenwirt anfragen.
