A very beautiful, alpine-inspired circular hike on the main Alpine ridge, crossing two ancient passes from the Ahrntal to the Zillertal, the Napfjoch and the Hörndlejoch.

The route crosses the south slopes of the Ahrntal from the Hollenze over the Steinerbach to the Walcherbach. Now the path turns towards the Napfjoch at 2635 m altitude. The Napfjoch is simply called “Napfe” by the locals and is wrongly entered as Mitterjoch on maps. The correct Mitterjoch lies about 300 m west.

A scenic highlight is the descent to the Oberlangebene in the furthest Sundergrund with its puddles and meanders. From there, there is a short, strenuous ascent to the Hörndlejoch, 2553 m, and then down through the Hollenze to the starting point.

    Author’s recommendation

It is worth setting off early to have enough time to look around and take photos. It is also advisable to impregnate your hiking boots very well because after a rainy night or morning dew, the grass remains dripping wet for a long time during the day...

    Safety information

The paths are generally well to very well marked, but in fog or poor visibility, especially near the passes, you have to be careful! It's easy to lose the path quickly and suddenly find yourself in "nothingness".

    Roadbook

At the bus stop, directly at the Gasthof Garber, begins path No. 17, which leads to the Kirchbühel of St. Jakob. Along No. 17, you walk on a forest road, then continue via forest paths and forestry roads to the first alpine meadow in the Hollenze. At the junction after this first meadow (Steinerbach signpost), turn right, slightly descending to the Gruberalm.

Just after the Gruberalm (approx. 1670 m), a narrow path leads steeply into the forest on the left (again Steinerbach signpost). After several switchbacks and a long, almost level traverse through the mountain forest, you reach the "Klammerhüttl" (approx. 1850 m) at the Steinerbach. Via a forestry road, you cross with gentle ups and downs the trench of the Walcherbach to the Fiechtenberghütte (approx. 1920 m). Now path No. 17A turns northwards towards the alpine hut “Kapöl” at 2142 m. The old military road leads with numerous switchbacks over the Walcherebene up to the Napfjoch (2635 m). After a rest at the pass, it continues northwards. The path passes numerous puddles and marshy hollows down to the path that leads up from the Sundergrund. At a signpost, the path now leads again southwards into the Oberlangebene. The Oberlangebene invites you to rest with its small lakes and puddles before the ascent to the Hörndlejoch begins. The path passes a small stone-built wayside shrine called the “Marienbildl” and then the strenuous ascent to the pass (2553 m) begins. Although partly deteriorated, the path is well marked.

From the pass, path No. 17 leads down to the Hollenze into the Ahrntal. First, it is a steep mountain path that leads down to the avalanche dams, then a stony former forestry road begins, which with three switchbacks leads to the Hollenzalm (1831 m). The Hollenzalm invites you to stop for a snack.

On forestry and forest roads (No. 17), you now return to St. Jakob, the starting point.

    Public transport

By train or bus to Bruneck, then by bus into the Ahrntal to the Garber stop

You can find the timetable for the Ahrntal at www.oberhollenzer.com

    Directions

From Bruneck to the Ahrntal up to the church in St. Jakob

    Parking

There are parking spaces at the church of St. Jakob.

You can also drive a bit further up the farm access road to the Bergerhöfe, where there is a small parking lot at the beginning of the forest road. This shortens the hike by about 1.5 hours (1 hour going up and half an hour going down). However, this parking lot is very limited, so an early start is advisable to secure a spot.
