From the long mountain ridge to the turquoise-blue Lake Tenno
The highlight of the 4-day tour leads from Rifugio Nino Pernici up to the scenic ridge of the Ledro Alps. Passing the Corno di Pichea and Monte Tofino, the route follows a mountain trail—partly exposed and briefly secured—as it crosses the 2,000-meter mark. This is followed by a long descent to the turquoise-blue Lake Tenno, before the final climb of about 400 meters in elevation to Rifugio San Pietro.

The third day is the most alpine and scenically diverse stage of the loop. Starting directly from Rifugio Nino Pernici, the trail climbs up the long mountain range between the Ledro Valley and Lake Tenno. Following the SAT 420 trail, the route leads over the Pichea Group toward Corno di Pichea and Monte Tofino. For long stretches, the trail runs close to the ridge, offering sweeping views of the Ledro Alps and the mountains surrounding Lake Garda, the Brenta Group, and the northern Lake Garda region. The SAT 420 is also part of the official “Giro delle Cime” route.

The stage reaches its highest point at Monte Tofino (2,151 m). This is followed by a long descent across the mountain pastures and alpine meadows north of the summit toward Lake Tenno. After a significant descent, a welcome break by the water awaits there. Finally, the route ascends again along the SAT 406A through forests and chestnut groves back up to Rifugio San Pietro—one of the most beautiful viewpoints above the northern part of Lake Garda.

Pack your swimwear: After the long descent

    ,

a dip in the turquoise-blue Lake Tenno is the perfect way to cool off.

If you’d rather skip the climb to the Rifugio San Pietro—with its spectacular views—you can also stay overnight in Villa del Monte, Tenno, or Canale and descend directly to Riva from there.

    Safety information

The ridge between Pichea and Monte Tofino requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. Several sections are exposed, with short stretches secured by wire ropes. The traverse should be avoided in wet conditions, fog, or thunderstorms.

    Roadbook

From the Rifugio Nino Pernici, it’s a short descent of a few minutes to the Bocca di Trat (1,581 m). From there, follow the SAT 420 trail toward Mazza di Pichea, Corno di Pichea, and Monte Tofino.

The trail quickly gains elevation and leads into increasingly alpine terrain. Passing the Mazza di Pichea, the route continues to the ridge of the Corno di Pichea (2,138 m). On the following section of the ridge, narrow mountain trails alternate with rocky passages. A few short sections are made easier by wire ropes. The trail stays right on the ridge for long stretches and offers magnificent views down into the surrounding valleys.

Continuing on the SAT 420, follow the ridge to Monte Tofino (2,151 m). After a brief descent, the trail climbs once more to the summit. From here, the view extends far across the Ledro Alps and, on a clear day, as far as the Adamello and Brenta ranges. The official “Giro delle Cime” also passes through Corno di Pichea and Monte Tofino.

From Monte Tofino, the SAT 420 trail initially continues over the Bocchetta dei Slavazì and toward Doss della Torta. Here, too, there are short exposed and secured sections. Then the long descent begins through the alpine pasture region of Malga Nardis.

Via mountain trails, alpine paths, and finally increasingly forested terrain, you now quickly lose elevation toward the Tenno Valley. In the lower section, the terrain becomes significantly easier. Before reaching the road near Ballino, follow a path to the right through the mountain forest. Cross the via ferrata parking lot to the road and, after a few hundred meters, follow the path opposite you toward Tenno. Finally, you reach Lake Tenno, whose intensely turquoise water offers a welcome change of pace after the long descent.

From Lake Tenno, follow the signs to Canale and from there to Rifugio San Pietro. The SAT 406A trail ascends through the forest to the rifugio’s parking lot. From there, follow the road for the final few meters to Rifugio San Pietro, located at 974 meters.
