02 Central Alpine Path West, E18: Kasseler Hut – Greizer Hut
We first leave the Kasseler Hut towards the southeast (ignoring the left fork), gradually turning south and west into the Eiskar, crossing many creek crossings and steep sections that require our full attention and sure-footedness. We cross under the Grüne-Wand-Spitze, Keilbachspitze, Großer Löffler, and Greizer Spitze. We approach the Löfflerkar, where we descend northwards to the Elsenklamm, which is well secured on both sides with cables and leads to a bridge.
On a mostly poor condition path (beware of rockfall!) over scree and glacier streams, we go northwest upwards into the Lapenkar and then left over a moraine ridge, under the rock faces of the Gigalitz, up to the Lapenscharte between Gigalitz and Lapenspitze.
Through many small hairpin bends over the scree field and rocky slopes, we reach the Greizer Hut. (Peaks: Großer Löffler, 3,379 m, 4 hrs; Gigalitz, 3,001 m, 2 ½ hrs; Großer Mörchner, 3,385 m, 4 ½ hrs.)
