The hilly landscape of Oberschaben has been shaped in the last glacial period. During that period, the terminal moraine of the Rhine glacier formed the characteristic landscape of the the Altdorfer forest, home of this tour.
The landscape will thus treat you with:
- Water features: ponds, creeks, marshes, and a medival canal system
- Mountain features: panoramic views over the surrounding landscapes and some climbs
- Single trails and other quiet roads, avoiding traffic as much as possible
I would recommend to cycle the tour clockwise, as then ascents are on asphalt and descents on single trails.
Author’s recommendation
- Bring your own food/water, as there are not many shops underway.
- The Bier am Bach self-service bar just before the end of the route, is an ideal spot to relax in the water and have a drink (cash contribution required).

Track types
Roadbook
The route can be started from 3 different points, depending on your means of transportation.
- With 1-2 regular cars: Bainders (main start)
- With larger road transport: Fuchsenloch (alternative start marked in the directions)
- With public transport: Alttan train station
The disadvantage of the alternative starting points is that biggest rewards are midway instead of at the end of the tour.
(Starting point Bainders) We commence with a road climb from our starting point in the hamlet of Bainders towards viewpoint Süh, from where both the Oberschaben landscape and the alps can be viewed. After some forest roads, we turn right for the first set of trails (Hirsch trail II + I). Afterwards, it goes downwards over more forest roads until reaching the parking spot in Fuchsenloch.
(Starting point Fuchsenloch) The next section over forest trails to Erbisreute is in need of maintenance, and can be circumvented by taking the direct asphalt road. From Erbisreute we go over beautiful argricultural roads towards Baumgarten, the lowest point of the route. After turning right in Baumgarten, we quickly enter the forest again and pass along a set of ponds; don't miss the short trail at the Hagenbachweiher. From there, we go over a hill to reach the valley of the Schwarzenbach, which we follow upstream, until turning north-east over forest roads.
After some more climbing, we reach the final reward of the tour, a long single trail descent towards the Weissenbronnen waterfalls. Here you can enjoy a "Bier-am-bach" from the self-service bar before returning towards the starting point.
Note
Public transport
Train station Alttan Wolfegg can be used as an access point to the route. This adds approximately another 5km and 100 altitude meters to the tour.Directions
(Starting point Bainders) From the North, the L316 connects Bad Waldsee to the village of Alttan. The starting point in Bainders is very close from there.
(Starting point Fuchsenloch) Fuchsenloch (Wanderparkplatz) can best be reached from Weingarten (from the Southwest).
Parking
There are no official parking spots in Bainders, and a start from this location is not suitable for large groups. Use the alternative starting point instead (see Turn-by-turn directions).Coordinates
