The Gamsöfen Loop S454, 36.4 km, 990 m ascent leads over the Hoisnradalm with views to Wolfgangsee further through impressive natural landscapes with a challenging descent for experts in the Gamsöfen.
The Gamsöfen Loop S454 has a steep uphill below the Hoisnradkreuzung as well as trail sections in the area of the Gamsöfen, which are also passable with sufficient riding skills. Note that the section at the Gamsöfen is exposed and there is a risk of falling. Good riding skills are mandatory here. Particular caution is required especially on wet ground after or during rain.
The following highlights make this tour, besides the sporting challenge, an unforgettable experience:
- Gentle warm-up on the Römerweg heading towards the Wildenstein castle ruins (km 3.8).
- A detour to the Eternal Wall at Anzenberg km 11.1, followed by rides on forest roads
- Past old salt tunnels over a steep uphill to the Hoisnradalm (km 22.9) for a refreshment break with views of Wolfgangsee
- After sufficient refreshment, it goes through the beautiful natural area at Leckenmoos to the Gamsöfen
- With a short and stony trail section (km 28.8), some of you will do a short pushing section (600 m 76 m elevation) here, to then ride above the Rettenbach back to Bad Ischl.
Author’s recommendation
Refreshment at the Hoisnradalm at km 22.9 with a homemade raspberry thyme juice and then an adventurous descent through the Gamsöfen.

Safety information
The section of the Gamsöfen can only be ridden with sufficient riding skills. As there is danger of falling, this is a black mountain bike trail. The definition can be found here.
The Gamsöfen Loop is a circular route and marked with the number S454. Routes with 400 numbers have a length of up to 50 km. The indicated ride times are net ride times with the E-MTB without breaks such as photo stops, refreshment breaks, etc.
Special caution is required besides the danger of falling at the Gamsöfen in Bad Ischl at the pushing section at the Esplanade in the bustle of the guests, as well as at the ascent at Anzenberg with the trucks from the local quarry.
To make the day perfect, here are a few tips worth considering before each tour.
Moreover, be aware that you are moving in the mountains and thus personal responsibility plays a big role. This concerns the choice of the route to be mastered, the expected weather, and the occasional dead zone in which you have no mobile signal.
Tips and suggestions
All mountain bike routes in Bad Ischl start at the Trinkhalle at Auböckplatz. The routes are signposted and numbered. All routes can also be reached from the Bad Ischl train station.
We welcome comments, tips, constructive criticism, and, of course, thousands of photos of your ride with the hashtag #badischl in your social media posts.
As new players on the field of mountain and leisure sports, we E-MTB riders have a special responsibility to behave properly.
In Graubünden, bikers and hikers share the paths. A project that should become a model. But this only works with mutual respect. Bad apples set us back by years.
With common rules, we ensure that the forest will continue to be a unique recreational and living space as well as a workplace for everyone.

Roadbook
We start right in the middle of Bad Ischl at the Trinkhalle heading towards the Traun and turn right onto the Salzkammergut Cycle Path R2 towards Hallstatt, following it upstream. In the area of the Esplanade we pay attention to the short pushing requirement at the Zauner and after about 1.1 km enter Engleitenstraße and turn right uphill. After about 200 m, we turn left uphill into Lindaustraße and immediately afterwards left into Mastaliergasse (km 1.3).
We cross the Mastaliergasse intersection and after 200 m turn left into Rabenneststraße (km 1.5) which we follow for about 1.1 km before crossing the Kaltenbach (km 2.7) straight ahead in a left curve (km 2.6) and now find ourselves on Römerstraße.
After about 300 m, we pass the barrier (km 3.0) to the forest road and follow this towards the Wildenstein castle ruins (km 3.8), which lie about 800 m to the left at the roadside. After about 1.9 km, slightly downhill on the Römerweg, we leave the forest road to the right and merge into the Salzkammergut Cycle Path R2 (km 5.7).
We follow the Salzkammergut Cycle Path in direction of Bad Goisern, cross the Traun and pass through Lauffen, finally after 2 km turning right to underpass the federal highway and leaving the Salzkammergut Cycle Path (km 7.7), turning onto Anzenmühlenstraße.
Past the open-air museum Anzenaumühle the road changes about 300 m uphill to the left from asphalt to gravel (km 8.0). For the next 2.4 km, there is a chance to get dusty due to the truck traffic from the Anzenaukogl quarry.
After another approx. 700 m in a left curve, we can take a detour (km 11.1) to the Eternal Wall, which is located immediately to our right on the forest road. It continues straight ahead for about 1.8 km. After a slight downhill ride at the intersection Gstichstraße / Anzenbergstraße in the forest, we turn left downhill in a right bend (km 12.9) to then after about 2.5 km take a sharp right uphill into Brunnleitenstraße (km 15.4).
We follow Brunnleitenstraße, pass the Steinberg tunnel in a left curve and after about 2.2 km uphill at the next intersection (km 17.6), keep slightly left, cross the Radgrabenbach to then after about 2.4 km on an almost flat section in a right curve at km 20.0 show our uphill skills.
Now just take a short breath and look for a line to pedal this rough train track (400m 60hm) steeply uphill. If you can't manage it, use the pushing help and look forward to the soon appearing opportunity to take a refreshment break at the Hoisnradalm (km 21.6).
After a well-deserved rest, return to the Hoisnradalm intersection (km 22.9) and turn sharp left past Leckenmoos in direction of Tauern. On the forest road, it goes slightly uphill for 1.5 km until the next turning option (km 24.4) left downhill.
The route goes downhill through the beautiful natural landscape below the Tauern. After about 3.5 km and a short uphill ride, turn at a sharp angle back left (km 27.9).
After about 1 km, on the left side of the path there is a hunting lodge in a left curve. Approximately 800 m after the lodge, the slightly overlooked entry (km 29.7) to the trail to the Gamsöfen is located.
The turnoff leads from the forest road downhill to the right on an old train track, which is wet, stony, and adventurous for about 600 m until we reach the path above the Rettenbach Gorge.
Here, we turn left downhill (km 30.3), caution is advised, as we are in a gorge with an unprotected 200m drop to the side. The path leads us downhill through the gorge in the forest until after about 2.2 km out of the forest (km 32.5) where we go straight into a field path. We stay on the field path for about 300 m and leave it at the left curve (km 32.8) to go straight ahead for another 200 m following the meadow path and turn right into Rosenkranzgasse (km 33.0) on asphalt.
200 m later at the intersection (km 33.2) we turn sharp right, cross the Rettenbach and immediately after turn into Hubhanslauweg towards Bad Ischl. We follow the path through the settlement along the Rettenbach downstream until after about 400 m turning right into Steinfeldstraße and after about 800 m crossing the Rettenbach again (km 34.7).
It goes downhill on asphalt along the railway, we cross the B145 and shortly after the Traun to then turn left onto the Cycle Path R2 (km 35.5) following the Traun upstream.
We follow the Cycle Path R2 for 900 m towards Bad Goisern and reach our start point at the Trinkhalle in Bad Ischl.
