The best way to get to the starting point of the route is by post bus. However, you can also tackle the 1125-meter ascent via the pass road on your own.

The route then starts immediately with an ascent hike of 500 meters in elevation up to Piz Umbrail (only a few sections are rideable). You can expect carrying and pushing sections. The effort, however, is immediately rewarded! The descent to Lai da Rims winds its way rideably through the wonderful mountain world. The trails, always somewhat filled with gravel and scree, invite trail surfing. After that, the route becomes a bit more technical, with many switchbacks, but still remains rideable and fun. The final section takes you down through dense forest to Sta. Maria.
Author’s recommendation
- For the last 150 meters in elevation to Piz Umbrail, the bike must be carried over a path partially secured with chains. The sections are narrow and from time to time a wheel or the handlebars of the bike hit the rock. Tough!
- It is mandatory to reserve the post bus to Umbrail Pass!
