Mountain bike route in unspoiled nature with incredibly long single trails and an idyllic ride right through the Palatinate Forest.

It starts at the station in Waldfischbach-Burgalben, after a short warm-up through the town we ride uphill, past Galgenfelsen, which can be climbed via some steps, into the terrain. There it first goes on a forest road, then on a steep trail further up. The reward for the ascent is a wonderful trail going up and down through the open forest. Then we ride longer on forest roads near the hut of the “Jäger aus Kurpfalz” before entering a long trail again, first downhill, passing Hergottsbrünnchen and then repeatedly sprinkled with short climbs, to Heltersberg. Here it is possible to shorten the route and return on the loop back to Waldfischbach-Burgalben: the single trail share then exceeds 50%.

The whole route is done by passing through the town and directly entering a downhill trail. It goes downhill on tight curves before we take a narrow trail up again. We cross the state road and continue on cycle paths and through the forest on a wide path through the Schwarzbach valley to Johanniskreuz. Here a break can be taken and we can refresh ourselves at a nearby restaurant.

Then it goes straight into a flat but fun trail after a short road section. Now we bike comfortably through the forest again, the forest road stretches longer before we turn onto a challenging, rocky single trail that leads us directly to the Sägsmühle campsite. The trail is indeed demanding and has higher steps that challenge our riding technique through the soft sand. We continue on a sandy path back to the state road before reaching Schmalenberg. After passing through the village, a steep downhill and then another climb on a narrow path await us. We pass through Heltersberg again. The following several kilometers of trail are a delight: a constant up and down brings us back to a wide path before shortly turning off again onto a varied trail. This leads us to the three rocks. We come to a panoramic viewpoint with a view of the town of Waldfischbach-Burgalben. Then we ride downhill, first on trail, then on road back to the starting point.

    OUR PATHFINDER RULES

“Out of everyday life – into nature!” A few fundamental rules help make the MTB route a sustainable experience for people and nature.

    1. Ride only on permitted paths. According to the Rhineland-Palatinate state forest law, cycling on footpaths and trails is not allowed except on the trails of our routes.
    2. Leave no traces. Take your trash home and protect our trails by your riding style. Avoid braking with locked tires. Do not shortcut hairpin bends.
    3. Keep your bike under control. Stay in your comfort zone, adjust speed to the situation, you must be able to stop within sight! Do not underestimate the technical and physical demands of our routes. Inform yourself in advance.
    4. Respect other path users. Announce your arrival in good time, preferably with our pathfinder bell! Do not ride on certified hiking trails. Be considerate on paths shared by hikers and mountain bikers. Hikers have the right of way. Let other path users pass.
    5. Be considerate of animals in the forest. We move in their habitat. Give them peace and do not disturb them while feeding. Avoid rides at dusk or night.
    6. Do not build illegal trails. Use existing, approved routes and course sections.
    7. Be a role model. Show through your behavior how mutual consideration works and leads to good coexistence in the forest for all users. Help by living these rules.

These rules are based on the Trail Rules of the German Initiative Mountainbike (www.dimb.de) and the #LoveTrailsRespectRules campaign of Bike Magazine.

    Safety information

This mountain bike route is rather easy and can also be shortened.

The trails are mostly flowy and flat, some steeper sections can also be pushed.

Own skills and fitness should be realistically assessed.

Riding the route is basically at your own risk and responsibility.

Forest-typical hazards such as fallen trees/branches etc. must be expected.

Please be sure to respect other forest users/hikers, stop and dismount if necessary: pedestrians have priority!

The whole route is marked with signs of the Mountain Bike Park Palatinate Forest.

For this long ride, it also makes sense to use the GPS track for navigation.

This route is suitable for e-mountain bikes.

    Tips and suggestions

    Partial route:

    Waldfischbach-Burgalben - Heltersberg - Waldfischbach-Burgalben

Ambitious leisure riders will find the right entry into the trail network of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park with this route. The high trail share is ideal for calmly working on your riding technique.

And maybe there will also be time to recharge some energy for bigger challenges at the sunny viewpoint "3 Felsen".

    Partial route:

    Johanniskreuz - Heltersberg - Johanniskreuz

The route runs from Johanniskreuz via the "Gümpels Weg" downhill through the so-called "Kanonenrohr" directly to the Sägsmühle campsite, whose operator is himself an enthusiastic biker.

With a constant change between up- and downhills, we arrive with a pleasant heaviness in the legs at our starting point. Some time for enjoying a cold beverage in one of the catering establishments in Johanniskreuz should definitely be planned ... for relaxation!
