The Letuksen loop is a circular route starting from the centre of Ukkohalla. The highlight is the climb to the summit of Iso Tuomivaara, the highest hill in Kainuu, where the route initially heads. After enjoying the views on Tuomivaara, the route continues on well-maintained gravel and forest roads through Letuksen village to Komulanköngäs waterfall and then back to Ukkohalla along gravel roads. The best time to experience the route is from early June to late September. The route mainly follows gravel and forest roads but detours to a pleasant approximately 2 km forest trail on top of Iso Tuomivaara.

The route is not technically challenging and is also suitable for those new to mountain biking. The forest section on the route is short and easy. The route features significant elevation changes and long climbs that raise your heart rate nicely. Conversely, the downhill sections offer time to recover from the climbs.

    Author’s recommendation

From Komulanköngäs there is also an option to go to Ukkohalla via mountain bike trails, choose the return route of the Komulanköngäs circuit.

    Roadbook

The starting point of the Letuksen route is next to the Ukkohalla parking area by the shore of Syväjärvi near the area’s hiking trail information board.

At the beginning of the route, you travel west along the shore of Syväjärvi. At the western end of the lake, turn right onto Syväjärvi roads and follow Syväjärventie all the way to the intersection with Hallanmaa gravel road. From here, start cycling right along Hallanmaantie. About 300 meters later, turn left according to the signs and immediately right onto the continuing forest road. The gravel road gently starts to climb toward the summit of Iso Tuomivaara and after about 3 kilometers the route reaches the top of the hill. From the hilltop, the route continues as a forest trail for just under 2 kilometers, after which the route reaches a gravel road. The route continues along the gravel road for 1 kilometer, then turns left onto a larger gravel road (signposted Komulanköngäs). Ride straight on this gravel road for about 4.5 km, after which the road branches left towards a yellow house and just before the house’s yard, turn left again onto a smaller forest road. Follow this forest road straight for about 4.6 km, then reach the gravel road and turn left towards Ukkohalla. The route passes the Komulanköngäs waterfall and continues along the gravel road to the Syväjärventie intersection, where you turn right towards Ukkohalla, following the same route taken at the start.

The route is marked on the terrain with mountain biking signs, featuring a mountain biker icon on a brown background.
