From St. Gertraud in the Ultental, many beautiful and rewarding routes lead through the Kirchberg valley, a side valley of the Ultental, to the many mountain peaks surrounding this valley in summer as well as in winter. However, all these routes have the slight drawback of the somewhat monotonous and long approach through the long Kirchberg valley, which runs on a forest road through the woods. So what could be more obvious than the idea to do this ascent with a mountain bike? The gentle and steady climb to the Kirchbergalm is ideal for riding with an MTB, but then it gets serious. The steep ascent to the Bärhapalm, interrupted by few flat sections, demands one or the other pushing section from non E-bike riders. But this does not detract from the joy and beauty of this route, and the reachable destination Bärhapalm is soon reached. From here it takes about 30 minutes to walk the remaining 200 meters in altitude up to the Rabbi-Joch and shortly down beyond it to the Haselgruber hut, which is already located in Trentino territory, from where the wonderful view of the surrounding Ortler mountains and the Brenta peaks in the south quickly makes you forget the effort of the ascent.

Those who have time and desire can also pay a visit to Lago Corvo, the largest lake of the Haselgruber lakes group, just above the shelter.

    Tips and suggestions

A section of the TransAlp route from Garmisch to Riva del Garda also runs on the described route here.

    Roadbook

Starting from the village center of St. Gertraud, we take the 106-marked meadow path, which leads into the Kirchberg valley and shortly afterwards merges into the forest road that leads through light forest to the pastures of the Kirchberg valley. Passing the non-managed Köhlgrubalm, we reach the Kirchbergalm at approx. 1:10 h, 1,891 m. Here there is an opportunity for a refreshment before it becomes steeper, passing some private huts, up to the Bärhapalm located at 2,295 m. Here the bikes are deposited, and on foot it continues in about 30 minutes up to the Rabbi-Joch, located at 2,460 m, the highest point of our route. Beyond the pass, a short descent to the Haselgruber hut at 2,425 m (3 h from St. Gertraud).

Return along the ascent path, (approx. 1.5 h)
