Falkenstein Freeride Trail Tour at the Rottachberg
MTB freeriders will find trails to let off steam in every region. The Allgäu doesn't exactly have to hide when it comes to trail density, but there are some special treats here for mountain bikers with fat tyres and long suspension travel. The Rottachberg foothills of the Alps, which stretch southeast along the Illertal valley to the Rottach reservoir between the B19 and the towns of Rettenberg and Kranzegg, are just 1100 m high and therefore snow-free even in spring, when the Alpine trails are still buried under a metre-thick blanket of snow. On the south-west side of the Rottachberg massif is one of the best climbing areas in the Allgäu, where the most difficult sport climbing routes climb up overhanging rock faces on Nagelfluh rock, a conglomerate rock that got its name from the Nagegelfluhkette mountain range opposite. At the highest point of the cliffs is the summit of the Falkenstein, from where there is also a magnificent view of the Allgäu mountains and the Illertal valley.
