Eastern Pyrenees - an east-west crossing of the Pirineos Orientales; Transpirenaica part 1
Catalonia, Cap Creus - El Pont de Suert
Starting from Llança, the route goes via Cadaqués, the town of Salvador Dalí, to the actual starting point, Cap de Creus in the eponymous Parc Natural.
In the following days, you travel through a gentle part of the Pyrenees with alpine meadows, deciduous and coniferous trees. However, steep ramps and poor surfaces cause non-pedelec riders to have to push their bikes.
After a swim in the Darnius reservoir, the charming Sant Llorenç de la Muga invites you to rest.
The impressive Parc Natural Alta Garrotxa proves to be a true paradise for nature lovers and athletes.
Camprodon offers everything the heart desires apart from a train connection.
In the villages, you repeatedly find bars—closed, hidden or shabby—like at the Toses train station at the start of the climb to the ski resort La Molina.
The pungent smell of a cattle breeding facility near Castellar de Tost temporarily dampens the appetite for meat.
It is questionable whether a detour to Andorra is worth it. – Try it yourself!
El Pont de Suert ultimately offers no train connection but otherwise excellent infrastructure.
Author’s recommendation
- The route proposed here is intended as a guide and basis; individual concrete planning is recommended.
- Basically: the closer to the main ridge, the more trail-like; the further south, the easier and more trafficked.
- Where gravel road or natural trail is indicated as surface, there are usually alternatives on asphalt; these can be used especially in case of delay or bad weather.
- When staying overnight in smaller places, appropriate advance planning in terms of time is required.
- Overnight stops are recommended in Llança, Sant Llorenç de la Muga, Montagut or Sant Llonenç d´Oix, Espolla, Camprodon, Moli de Fornols (casa rural with very good accommodation and excellent food; some knowledge of Spanish is advantageous), Planoles, Sant Julià de Loria, Llavorsi, El Pont de Suert.
- Bagà and Espui are difficult for overnight stays.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

This route is only conditionally suitable for gravel bikes, at least on longer sections it is a hardcore tour.
For accommodation bookings for 2-4 persons, usually a lead time of one day is sufficient. For overnight stays on weekends, early reservation is necessary; the reason for this is the large number of motorcyclists who frequent the Pyrenean passes between France and Spain.
Especially in the eastern Pyrenees, off-road vehicles and terrain machines are active on the gravel roads.
