The ascent to Fóia (902 m), which runs from 30 to 50 km, is in several stages intersected by small descents, and it is the greatest challenge of the route. Once at the summit, you can enjoy unrivalled views of the South coast, the West coast and the northern Alentejo mountain ranges.
Note that on the way back there are several climbs that may still require some effort.
The vast majority of the route follows paths and roads, but also some small asphalted roads and several single tracks, the first at 1.2 km, with a very technical climb of approximately 200m. The other tracks are almost always descending near Fóia and Marmelete (see Important Notices).
Most of the route passes through uninhabited areas therefore the company of at least one more cyclist is recommended.
There is a ford river crossing at 66 km which may not be viable after heavy rains.
At 85 km there is a river crossing with the possibility of passing by a wooden bridge but its solidity is not guaranteed. Evaluate the situation. If in doubt and if it is viable, pass the stream by the ford.
Note that the route passes by numerous small villages, with the highlights being Marmelete (66 km ) and Odeceixe (97 km).

Author’s recommendation
Since the route is very long and demanding, consider doing it in two stages, staying overnight in Monchique, thus leaving the final attack on Fóia for the second day.

Safety information
This route is very demanding especially on the physical level, but also on the technical level, so we only recommend it for very good mountain bikers, who good technique and appropriate bikes.
There are several climbs and descents that easily exceed the 20% slope. Check the brakes thoroughly before launching yourself into the course. Please note that there are no bike repair shops along or in the vicinity of the route, and check all equipment thoroughly before setting off.
The route crosses and, at times, follows along several national roads and small municipal roads that may at times have some traffic. Caution is recommended.
Several sections of the route coincide with the Historical Route (GR11) and some Circular Routes of the Vicentina Route, as well as the Via Algarviana (GR13). Meeting with walkers is very likely.
Please note that there are two very hard and long sections of about 30 km (from 10 km to 40 km and from 66 km to 96 km) without any possibility of getting provisions, therefore it is best to get supplies beforehand .
The single track at 65 km, just before reaching Marmelete, passes steeply through low lying areas and may be too slippery when there has been rain. Assess the situation and, as an alternative option, you can choose to take a right on the tarmac road, resuming the route at the end of this descent. The end of this single track, just as you arrive at the N267, has a drop of about 1 m.
