A challenging day route through the Harz and Kyffhäuser. Nature meets culture on this route, which features a variety of caves.
The cave route begins and ends in Nordhausen. Along the route there are several biker-friendly accommodations that can be chosen flexibly as start and end points. On nearly 200 km through the Harz and Kyffhäuser, you can expect some winding sections. The title of the route says it all. Five caves can be discovered and visited along the way. These include the Einhornhöhle near Scharzfeld, the Herrmanns and Baumann Caves in the cave village of Rübeland, the Barbarossa Cave at the foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains, where Emperor Rotbart still sleeps today, and the Heimkehle on the state border between Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, great places such as Bad Frankenhausen with the Panorama Museum, Nordhausen with the "Echter Nordhäuser Traditionsbrennerei", the half-timbered town of Stolberg/Harz, or the highest town in the Harz, Braunlage, are also visited.

Roadbook
The cave route begins and ends in Nordhausen. Along the route, there are several biker-friendly accommodations that can be chosen flexibly as start and end points. If you choose Nordhausen as a starting point, you first head via Herreden and Hörnigen towards Bad Sachsa and on to Scharzfeld.
The Einhornhöhle awaits a visit here; a free parking lot is located about 250 m away. After a visit, the route continues via Herzberg, St. Andreasberg, and Braunlage right through the Harz with great curves and breathtaking views all the way to Elbingerode. From there, it is only a short distance to Rübeland. Here you will find the Rübeland dripstone caves.
The journey continues past the Rappbode Reservoir via Stiege, Breitenstein, Stollberg, to Rottleberode. Here, the next cave adventure awaits: the Heimkehle. There is plenty of parking directly at the cave entrance.
After the guided tour, the route continues via Berga to Kelbra and then over the "famous" 36 curves up the Kyffhäuser to Bad Frankenhausen. Next is Rottleben, where you come to the Barbarossa Cave.
There is sufficient parking available near the cave. This is the last cave on the route. Passing through Steinthaleben and by the Kelbra Reservoir, the route leads through the Badra Schweiz toward Sondershausen. From there, it returns to the starting point in Nordhausen.
