Selected alternatives for you
The ski tour options in the Sellrain are legendary and therefore well frequented. The surprising thing: with some local knowledge, you can find even the classic routes with lonely variants. In combination with the huts well spread throughout the area, this results in highly varied traverses.

Sellrain is a ski touring paradise with destinations that can also feature alpine climbing sections and multi-hour ascents like the Lisenser Fernerkogel. But most of the summits are simply perfect for the average ski tourer, who can gather plenty of experience here for larger, high alpine undertakings in the Central Alps. However, the offer creates demand. Many Innsbruck and Munich ski tourers use the opportunities and also like the Sellrain repeatedly because of the trouble-free approach. Still, even here you find untracked slopes if you follow two basic rules: Either get up early or think about where you want to go. Some examples can be found in a varied traverse of the Sellrain mountains, where you repeatedly discover new, surprisingly quiet sides of well-known ski tour classics.

    Author’s recommendation

There are so many tours in Sellrain that this route is only one of many possible traverses of the area. Variants can be found everywhere, so depending on the current snow and avalanche situation, there are detour options everywhere.

    Safety information

A varied route that combines some of the Sellrain ski tour classics on partly little-used routes. Short sections steep and avalanche-prone, crampons are mandatory, ice axes can be helpful depending on conditions.

    Roadbook

Stage 1: Praxmar (1687 m) – across the Schefalm into the Kamplloch – over the XXL slopes to the ski depot and on foot (one section secured with a chain) to the Zischgeles (3005 m) – with good conditions, descent directly from the summit, otherwise traverse from the ski depot to the ridge that bounds the Sattelloch on the west side (approx. 2850 m) – descent through the Wilde Karl, where from about 2600 meters altitude you roughly follow the summer path – flat in the valley floor to the Hint. Gleirschalm (2188 m) and ascent to the Pforzheimer Hut (2308 m).

Stage 2: Ascent through the Roßkar to the Samerschlag (2831 m) – descent into the Gleirschtal – ascent to the Zischgenscharte, the last meters very steep – detour on a partly secured path to the Schöntalspitze (3008 m) – from the Zischgenscharte very steep descent southward, then swinging widely southwest to the Westfalenhaus (2273 m).

Stage 3: With some altitude loss into the Längental – at around 2400 meters you turn right (southwest) and finally ascend through the steep cirque with the remnants of the Grüne Tatzen glacier to the Seeblaskogel (3224 m, the last meters possibly on foot, caution: cornices!) – short descent, then traverse to P.3102 – through a south-facing cirque to the Bachfallen glacier – Winnebachsee Hut (2362 m).

Stage 4: Flat into the Winnebach valley – over beautiful slopes to beneath the Zwieselbachjoch – over the Grießkogel glacier to the Breiten Grießkogel (3287 m) – descent to the Zwieselbachjoch (2870 m, short ascent) – through the long Zwieselbach valley to the Schweinfurter Hut (2034 m).

Stage 5: Partly steep ascent to the wide meadows of the Zwieselbachalm – through the Wide cirque to the Kraspesspitze (2953 m) – from the saddle (2910 m) southeast of the summit steeply northeast into the Wilde Kar – through the cirque into a basin and here heading north-facing, but rather towards the Kälberkar (there are drop-offs in the fall line) into the basin above the Zwing – through the Kraspes valley to Haggen (1650 m) – by bus or hitchhiking via Gries im Sellrain back to Praxmar.
