This exciting route takes us from Saarland through the Palatinate Forest, the Ried, and the Odenwald to the Main River. The individual stages can be quite hilly, which we should always keep well in mind when planning the respective daily distances.
The Palatinate Forest Club, the Odenwald Club, and the Mainz Lenneberg Club jointly maintain the 290 km long Saar-Rhine-Main route. Apart from the yellow marking cross, we will find no further indications of the next town or correct direction along the way, so it is advisable to have appropriate map material with you. We begin our hike at the Schlossberg Caves in Homburg and walk via Waldfischbach-Burgalben through a vast forest area as well as the Schwarzbach valley to Johanniskreuz, a meeting point for spa guests, mountain bike fans, and motorcyclists. The path then leads us through the Elmstein valley, along the Helm creek to Lambrecht and the Lambertskreuz (Palatinate Forest Club hut). Over the hills, it passes Hardenburg near Bad Dürkheim and then continues into the northern Palatinate highlands to Kirchheimbolanden and Oppenheim. Vineyards line the way to Alsheim.
