Safety information
Bad weather alternative: This trail passes some gullies and underneath cliffs where rockfall could happen as a result of heavy rain. There are also exposed sections of trail which could be slippery when wet, and metal cables which should not be used during thunderstorms. If severe wet weather or storms are forecast (please note that most storms in the Dolomites pass through very quickly), we recommend not continuing to Rifugio Vandelli and instead contacting us to help you arrange alternative accommodation for the night.
These directions and GPS tracks should be used only as a tool to aid navigation. Roads and trails are not always drawn on digital maps exactly as they are in real life, and trail conditions can change over time, leading to alternate routings. Always watch the trail and pay close attention to the trail signage, especially regarding detours or dangers that may lie on the route. Make safe navigation decisions that consider all of these factors. Never blindly follow a GPS track.
Tips and suggestions
Although there are cables and there is some exposure on this route, this segment is considered the more mellow alternative to Segment M, and it follows the main approach used by day hikers to reach Lago di Sorapis. To avoid cables altogether, you would need to do Segment N in reverse.
Roadbook
From the bus stop opposite Hotel Passo Tre Croci– walk carefully along the side of the road, following the bus' travel direction. Turn right at the gated, gravel track that leads into the forest – signposted Rifugio Al Sorapis. Follow the well-graded trail, ascending through pleasant forest. Passing a bunker on your right, the path will narrow and decrease in quality. Cross a large boulder field and continue straight, crossing 2 more rocky gullies. The path will eventually begin to climb at a steeper gradient and become more challenging underfoot, with steep drops to your left-hand side. As you zig-zag upwards, pass a small section of trail protected by cable before climbing a set of metal stairs. Continue on a very uneven trail, watching out for tree roots before crossing a further cable-protected section, which could be slippery when wet. Begin to descend on an undulating path, crossing one more cable-protected section until you reach a junction with a signpost. Continue straight at this junction following signs for ‘Rif Sorapis Vandelli 215’. Follow this trail until you reach a small stream. Turn right to go to Sorapis Lake, or cross the stream and turn left uphill to Rifugio Vandelli.
