Starting from Châtenois, a fortified village, the trail first leads to the Monkey Mountain. This site is home to more than 200 Barbary Macaques and surprises visitors due to their proximity, with the animals not hesitating to take popcorn right from the bag. The next site is the renowned Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg dating from the 12th century, which can be visited year-round, promising a journey back to the Middle Ages for everyone.

Afterwards, three other castles overlooking the famous wine village of Ribeauvillé are to be discovered before descending back into the valley.

    Author’s recommendation

Take the time to visit the Eagle Sanctuary or the Monkey Mountain, which will delight young and old alike, as well as the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, a magnificent fortress overlooking the Alsace valley. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance during the high season of the hike.
