The Via Claudia Augusta connected the Danube across the Alps with the ancient Adriatic harbor of Altinum (today Altino) near Venice and the river harbor Hostilia (today Ostiglia) on the Po. Emperor Claudius was the one who expanded it into the first road connecting Europe across the Alps. The Via Claudia Augusta remained an important road over the centuries and shaped regions, places, times, people, and their cultures.

    Author’s recommendation

Via Claudia Huckepack: An optional shuttle service is offered over the Fern Pass (1,215 m) and the Reschen Pass (1,450 m). Thus, the Via Claudia Augusta can also be called the easiest Alpine crossing for cyclists. From the Reschen Pass onwards, all cyclists face a continuous downhill gradient.

    Safety information

The route follows asphalted or gravel cycle paths and quiet side roads. Flat from the Danube to Schongau, gently rolling through the Allgäu. Also in Tyrol – with gentle ascents and descents – through Zwischentoren, the Gurgl and Inn valleys. Mainly downhill from the Reschen Pass to Trento. After Antino near Venice, still over one hill and 3 passes, but clearly more varied and interesting. After Verona or Ostiglia, flat except for one hill.

    Roadbook

The Via Claudia Augusta remained one of the most important north-south connections even after the Romans. The associated earning opportunities, trade, and encounters with travelers from many countries shaped the people along this route. Very different regions and cultures still meet here today, making a bike ride on the traces of the Romans so exciting.

Numerous attractions line up like shining pearls on a necklace: starting with the picturesque Donauwörth at the starting point of the route, Augsburg dating back to the Romans, and the romantic Neuschwanstein Castle. In the mountains, first at the gateway to Tyrol, in Reutte the European Castle World Ehrenberg and the picturesque Fern Pass await. In the wild romantic valley landscapes, there is the House of Carnival in Imst, the Tyrolean water world in Zams, or the Archaeological Museum in Fließ before the climb over Finstermünz to the Reschen Pass. This centuries-old mountain pass road leads further to South Tyrol, past the idyllic Reschen lake and down the southern side of the Alps to Merano and Bolzano.

From the historic city of Trento, the route continues either on the Altinate route to the former Roman harbor in Altino near Venice (more varied but with some hills, for which there hopefully will be a shuttle soon) or on the Padana route to Ostiglia on the Po. A bike hike on a route once traveled by the Romans.

    Directions

Since it is relatively complicated and time-consuming to reach the starting point of the route by train, there is a return bus for cyclists and bikes in the summer months from Altino/Venice or Ostiglia/Verona, which currently runs mainly on weekends but is planned to run daily in the future and be used as a luggage service in the opposite direction (current info and registration at www.viaclaudia.org)
