Unique Gemerské spojky - Chyžná voda (Lubeník) - Slavošovce
A unique place for cycling tourism is offered by the Gemerské spojky, representing unfinished railway connections from the period of World War II.
Gemerské spojky is the name of a railway line that was being constructed in the 1940s. After the southern territory of Slovakia was ceded to the Kingdom of Hungary in 1938, the Gemer region was left without a railway connection to the rest of the republic. The new Slovak government decided to build a new railway line to connect the cut-off tracks. Construction works started in 1940 and ended following the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising. After the end of World War II, there was still consideration to complete the construction. However, since Czechoslovakia was restored to its original borders (regaining the ceded territories), this was no longer necessary.
In 4 years, 4 tunnels and several bridge and arch structures were built, which attract many visitors. It is exceptional that several of these structures are accessible and the official cycling route passes through them.
