To folk traditions in the village of Salka
Kamenica nad Hronom - Chľaba - Salka. Route suitable for mountain bike and gravel.
The route we present to you in the following lines is a moderately demanding cycling route with a length of 19 kilometers and an elevation gain of 223 meters, connecting the villages of Kamenica nad Hronom and Salka.
Our journey into traditions begins in Kamenica nad Hronom along the blue cycling sign, which goes under the smallest mountain range in the Slovak Republic - the Burda mountain range with an area of only 20 square kilometers. On the way to the village of Chľaba, our mightiest river, the Danube, constantly accompanies us. We pass through Kováčov and at the cycling sign Chľaba we say goodbye to flat terrain and welcome a tilted plain. Through the longest valley of the Burda mountain range - the Great Valley, we ascend 204 meters in less than five kilometers.
After a pleasant cardio workout, the ascent ends at the signpost Rázcestie na Bajtavu. We cross the blue hiking sign that we left at the Pod Burdov signpost. We face a gentle descent of 208 meters into the village of Leľa, during which we can rest a little. After Leľa, the terrain changes; we alternate asphalt road with a dirt road, which brings us closer to the Ipeľ River and the border with Hungary. Against the current of the Ipeľ River, we head to the village of Salka, which is also the final point of this cycling route.
And in the village of Salka, we must not miss the House of Folk Traditions, which was built in 1897 and houses a permanent crafts exhibition. Besides the permanent exhibition, summer weekly camps are prepared for children, where they can learn how to weave on looms, knit baskets, or make ceramics. Our ancient folk traditions thus continue and teach new generations the art of our grandparents.
Author’s recommendation
If you also enjoy hiking, we definitely recommend the Skaly lookout, which offers impressive views of the Danube River, the confluence of the Hron and Danube, as well as the cathedral in Esztergom.
Also noteworthy is the observation tower above the village of Chľaba, which offers very similar views including a view of the Hungarian Pilis mountain range.
