The route preserves numerous remnants of the old railroad: you’ll cross metal bridges and pass by small, abandoned stations, while the surrounding landscape alternates between countryside, towns, and sites of historical and cultural interest.
Along the way, you’ll pass through San Giovanni in Persiceto, Crevalcore, Camposanto, San Felice sul Panaro, and Mirandola, with the nearby Valli Mirandolesi—an area of particular natural interest and a prime spot for birdwatching. From here, the route continues toward San Possidonio and Concordia sulla Secchia.
The Ciclovia del Sole is part of EuroVelo 7 – Sun Route, one of Europe’s major cycling routes, connecting North Cape to Malta. From Osteria Nuova to Concordia sulla Secchia, the route runs almost entirely on bike paths separated from traffic, except for a few stretches of low-traffic secondary roads. Between Bologna and Osteria Nuova, however, you’ll follow a temporary route that is partially shared with vehicular traffic.
The bike path is flat and suitable for various types of bicycles. The presence of numerous train stations along the route also allows you to combine biking and train travel, choosing to cover even just a portion of the itinerary. Along the route, there are also rest areas equipped for charging e-bikes and electronic devices.
