The Sky Disc Cycle Route connects the site where the "Nebra Sky Disc" was found near Wangen with its storage location, the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle. The approx. 73 km long cycle path is part of the "Sky Paths" tourist route and runs through the Burgenland district, the Mansfeld-Südharz district and the Saale district as well as the city of Halle.

    Author’s recommendation

The combination of the Sky Disc Cycle Route with the Unstrut Cycle Route to Naumburg and the Saale Cycle Route to Halle results in a circular route (approx. 180 km) that not only opens up the archaeologically significant sites to cyclists, but also introduces them to the scenic and cultural diversity of the region in southern Saxony-Anhalt.
Other connection options from the Sky Disc Cycle Route include the Unstrut Cycle Route from Wangen in the direction of Thuringia, the Saale Cycle Route from Naumburg to the south or from Halle to the Elbe and the Saale-Harz Cycle Route from Seeburg via Lutherstadt Eisleben to the Harz Mountains.

    Nebra Sky Disk:

The almost circular plate has a diameter of about 32 centimeters and a thickness of 4.5 millimeters in the middle and 1.7 millimeters at the edge. The weight is approx. 2 kilograms. The disk is made of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, the copper content of which has been proven to come from the Mitterberg near Mühlbach am Hochkönig in the Eastern Alps. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes contained in the copper enables this location to be determined. In addition to a low tin content of 2.5 percent, it has a high arsenic content of 0.2 percent, which is typical for the Bronze Age. It was apparently driven from a bronze flat and repeatedly heated in order to avoid or eliminate stress cracks. This caused it to turn a deep brown to black color. Today's green coloration, caused by a layer of malachite corrosion, is the result of long storage in the ground.

The applications of unalloyed sheet gold are inlaid and have been added to and altered several times. Based on the accompanying finds (bronze swords, two axes, a chisel and fragments of spiral bracelets), it can be assumed that it was buried around 1600 BC; its date of manufacture is estimated to be between 2100 and 1700 BC.

    Roadbook

The route branches off from the Unstrut cycle path in Wangen and leads via the Nebra Ark Adventure Centre, an architectural replica of the sky barque, to the site where the Sky Disc was found on the Mittelberg, where a 30-metre-high observation tower, which is also a sundial, is intended to recreate the view at that time. The tour continues through the Ziegelroda Forest, past the Hermannseck animal enclosure to Querfurt, where there is an imposing castle to visit.
From Querfurt, the route passes through the Mansfelder Land region with its wine-growing area around the Süßen See lake and joins the Saale-Harz cycle path in Seeburg. The route then takes you through the Saale district to Halle, where the Nebra Sky Disk can be viewed in the State Museum of Prehistory.

The route of the Sky Disc Trail:

    Nebra - Wangen - "Nebra Ark" visitor center - Mittelberg - Ziegelrodaer Forst - Hermannseck - Leimbach - Querfurt - Obhausen - Kuckenburg - Esperstedt - Schraplau - Röblingen am See - Aseleben - Seeburg - Saale-Harz cycle path - Halle (Saale)
