Pilgrim MTB route Klagenfurt - Rome base
A challenge: with the BioBike through beautiful landscapes to Rome. Impressive the Alpen-Adria cycle path from Tarvis to Grado, the lagoon of Venice and the Apennines.
From Klagenfurt along the Wörthersee to Villach (Drau cycle path), further to Tarvis constantly descending on the Alpen-Adria cycle path to Gemona (critical phases due to tunnels and bridges) - continuing through beautiful nature parks to Portogruaro - Jesolo - which delights with its bustling atmosphere - through the lagoon of Venice with 3 ferry transfers. The magnificent city of Ravenna with its medieval charms, via Cesena into the Savio valley to the Apennines - to be mastered 1,200 meters of altitude - then awaits the descent to Arezzo at roaring speed - the beautiful castle town Orvieto - further less spectacular over plateaus - the route of the "Ciclovia del Sole" - which sometimes proves impassable, up to the wonderfully beautiful cycle path along the Tiber into the center of Rome.
Author’s recommendation
Depending on weather/conditions, choose the best route. The long-distance cycle path Ciclovia del Sole usually proves difficult, meaning unmaintained, overgrown

Tips and suggestions
The weather is important, the months of May and September are ideal for several reasons (less crowds, easier booking of accommodation, usually suitable temperatures). Two rest days are planned - admiring cultural institutions along the way - it should not be a purely sporting event - and manageable distances are chosen to distribute forces well. The book - BY BIKE TO ROME - is highly recommended - as well as a several-month preparation period: bookings for Rome hotel and Nightjet, training throughout the winter on the ergometer - later with full weight on the bike (saddle bags).
Roadbook
From Klagenfurt follow the Wörthersee cycle path (north shore), later at Lind ob Velden switch to the Drau cycle path (marked) continuing to Villach - then along the Gail to Arnoldstein, overnight here. Then continue on the Alpen-Adria cycle path via Tarvis downhill over the former railway line crossing high bridges and long tunnels (partly unlit) to Gemona - overnight. Now briefly following the AAR and continuing to Portogruaro on a beautiful mostly flat road. Overnight. The further route to Jesolo is partly very busy (federal road). Overnight. Now along the lagoon (elaborate cycle path, lot of traffic, usually 2 hours waiting time) and by ferry 14 to the island of Lido. Along this to the next harbor, then by ferry 11 to the next island - beautiful cycling - again ferry 11 to Chioggia. Picturesque. Somewhat difficult orientation towards Ravenna. Now the Via Acciaioli (alternatively the SS 309) is used. From here conditions must depend on the rider's assessment. The proposed cycle path is mostly cumbersome, the expressway easy to ride, only the traffic is intense (except Saturday/Sunday). The next destination should be Ravenna, a day of rest is advisable. Now via Cesena and the Savio valley to the Apennines, which fully challenges (1,200 m altitude on 11 km). The continuation to Arezzo is actually a descent, with Bibbiena the northern-starting Ciclovia del Sole is suggested. The conditions of this long-distance cycle path are more than doubtful - many pushing sections, poor conditions, overgrown - it is advisable to take the federal road repeatedly. You reach Orvieto (worth seeing) and finally the last days to Rome. The exact route guidance can be taken from the plan and the partial sections - but they do not represent a recommendation, as the length of the daily stage, the possible accommodation as well as the route itself can/should be defined.

Equipment
If you set the next destination daily and stay overnight in inexpensive accommodations (overnight/breakfast), the equipment (all-weather) is manageable. The saddle usually carries 10 kg - this sets the limit. The route is only recommended for experienced cyclists who know what they need, a service check of the bike before the start is essential.
