Selected alternatives for you
Worthwhile circular route with scenic passes and beautifully guided bike paths through Trentino and eastern Lombardy from Arco on Lake Garda via Madonna Di Campiglio and the Passo Tonale through Val Camonica to Breno. From there over the small, remote Passo Di Crocedomini, across to Lake Ledro and on the old Ponale road to Riva del Garda and finally back to Arco.

This circular route is a nice alternative to the stationary day routes at Lake Garda. The routing runs on regional, partly optimally developed bike paths, for example on the first stage. Larger sections lead on asphalt, mostly uphill to the passes and downhill. Here you often also have the choice between both. In autumn the roads are relatively empty and you can let it roll. In summer, you might prefer to consistently take the bike paths through nature, which are more demanding in terms of fitness and technique. Outstanding in terms of landscape are the views of the Brenta group and the Adamello massif. We rode the circular route in the following day stages: Day 1: Arco along the Sarca to Tione Day 2: Tione via Madonna Di Campiglio to Dimaro Day 3: Dimaro over the Passo Tonale to Breno Day 4: Breno over the Passo Crocedomini (highlight) to Lake Idro Day 5: Lake Idro over Lake Ledro and the Ponale road to Riva del Garda

    Author’s recommendation

The routes are planned so that you always arrive at the high points and passes for lunch breaks. It is worth taking time here for extensive breaks and to enjoy the landscape. There are many places to stop and refresh, but in autumn these thin out significantly.

    Safety information

If you have warmed up at Lake Garda beforehand, you know how steep and gravelly terrain and paths can be there. This circular route is generally not technically difficult. However, here and there there are also gravel paths that you should be able to master with your loaded vehicle. If necessary: push a short section. Fitness is required for day stages with 2000 meters of altitude. Brakes must be fit and brake pads preferably new: high wear!

    Roadbook

The route starts in Arco at the Chiesa di Arco, the track starts at Camping Zoo. You pass it when you head north towards Dro. Through olive groves and with the towering Monte Brento and Monte Casale to the left, we ride on the bike path parallel to the SS45 along the Sarca riverbank upstream. Shortly before Lago di Toblino, the river bends west into a mighty gorge, Canyon del Limaro. Here we turn onto the SS237 and in four hairpin bends climb about 400 meters altitude. Here we follow the bike path that leads back onto the road before Ponte Arche. We leave Comano Terme on the left and continue riding high towards Stenico and enjoy the view, well worth it! In Coltura, the path descends and crosses the Sarca to Tione. Here ends stage one.

From Tione, there is a very well signposted bike path off the main road 239 to Madonna di Campiglio, which leads beautifully through nature. From here either moderately on the road or somewhat steeper on the bike path to Passo Campo Carlo Magno at 1681 m altitude. From here spectacular views of the Brenta. For the descent, the same choices apply. We greatly enjoyed the descent on the road to Dimaro. Central place with good shopping facilities. End of stage two.

For the third stage, we follow good signage along the banks of the Torrente Nocce through picturesque small places. From Osana, you switch to the road that leads up to Passo Tonale at 1883 meters. Like Madonna di Campiglio, the place is mainly shaped by winter tourism. From now on: roll, roll, roll! The route leads through Val Camonica to Edolo, mostly on a well-maintained bike path and partly on the road. However, the road is very busy. Thus, further along, detours via Novelle, Sellero Capo di Ponte, Ono San Pietro (nice accommodation: Hazienda Agricultura) and Cerveno, etc. to Breno are recommended. This stage is comparatively long. From Breno, you can then ride straight to Lake Idro.

This stage is the most beautiful of all because it leads over the somewhat remote Passo di Crocedomini (1892 m). You can comfortably ride this day on the road (SPBS345) and enjoy steady pedaling. From Campolaro, it then climbs more steeply. At the pass, the namesake refuge awaits with food and drink and pretty stickers for your bike. As always: enjoy the descent and view as you rush down between Monte Colombina and Monte Misa, always following the road. Shortly before the very worth seeing Bagolino, you have to decide whether to stay on the height and go through the town, then keep left here or keep right on the road to Ponte Caffaro. Attention: you do not need to complete the last large hairpin, cyclists turn left off the road here, watch for signs. Various accommodation options at Lake Idro. On the way to Storo, avoid the main road and rather take the riverside path along the Chiese.

To conclude this circular route, you take the SS240 towards Lake Ledro in Storo. With a moderate ascent, the road leads between steep mountains to Lago dÁmpola. Here you can turn right and also take the Tremalzo Pass "along with it". From here you can again switch to a bike path or stay on the road. Here our clear recommendation: bike path! Beyond Lake Ledro it then gets a bit steeper and the terrain gravelly! Attention: the track leads to a tunnel shortly behind Caragena. This is no longer allowed. You briefly lead right on the road towards Pregasina and then sharply left briefly through the valley and then out to the Ponale road. Secure all bags well. Once you get the view of Lake Garda, it gets very bumpy. Now a unique view over Lake Garda as you ride down to Riva del Garda. Then along the lakeshore to Torbole. Here turn left and roll along the Sarca riverbank and make a last stop at the Bikefarm. After a few kilometers, we reach our starting point Arco.

    Have fun riding the route.

    Equipment

My recommendation: MTB or E-MTB. Pannier bags must withstand a rough track and must not fly out immediately. I have been riding with Ortlieb bags for decades and am very satisfied with them.
