In its penultimate stage, the Iron Curtain Trail leads us from Sopron to Austria and back to Hungary, to the town of Kőszeg with 12,000 inhabitants. The 63.7 km long section, with a total of 634 meters of elevation gain, can also be called the "mountain stage" of the Iron Curtain Trail. However, the ascents, which are all on asphalt roads and very gentle, are easy to manage.

The fourth section of the long-distance cycle route along the Iron Curtain is characterized primarily by its variety of scenery. Impressive distant views alternate with idyllic vineyards, gentle hilly landscapes, and dense forests. The pleasant route gives us the opportunity to simply enjoy cycling and fully take in the views. For all history enthusiasts, it becomes interesting again at the latest in Lutzmannsburg when we cross the border. Directly at the border crossing to Austria there is an impressive sculpture built by students to remember the last refugee who was shot at the Iron Curtain. Our day's destination, the Hungarian town of Kőszeg, also has a turbulent history. In addition to evidence from the Turkish wars about 400 years ago, for example, the ruins of an old synagogue recall the crimes committed against the Jewish population during the Second World War.

On this stage too, we can take a short swimming break. The thermal spa in Lutzmannsburg offers the ideal opportunity for this.

From our starting point in Sopron, we leave the town heading south following the signs. Slightly uphill we leave the town center, until finally rolling down a quiet country road to Harka. Here we have a very nice distant view towards the Hungarian/Austrian border. The route leads us through Harka and along extensive vineyards to Neckendorf. This landscape continues to accompany us on the way to Raiding and Kleinwarasdorf. The entire route is well signposted and easy to follow. From Kleinwarasdorf we cycle along narrow farm roads through numerous fields and meadows to Kroatisch Minihof and Nikitsch. Then we continue on the country road for a short detour into Hungary. Initially we cycle towards the Hungarian town of Zsira, but shortly before entering the town we leave the main road and ride to the border crossing near Lutzmannsburg. Here a sculpture reminds us of the time before the border opening. Through the wine-growing hills above Lutzmannsburg, we cycle to Frankenau and further to Klostermarienberg. Here the landscape changes a bit and dense forests now accompany our route. We cross the border back to Hungary near Ölmond and cycle through the gentle hilly landscape to our day's destination Kőszeg.
