Handbike tour with light electric assistance along the Danube Cycle Path from Passau to Vienna in 5 stages.

The tour is generally easy to ride, on paved paths. In Engelhartszell, it’s better to take the left bank of the Danube; the right bank is hilly.

There are some challenges before Grein, including two very steep sections ( approx. 10 meters). After Melk, when switching to the left bank of the Danube, there is a very steep climb up to the bridge (18%). The surfaces through the towns are often cobblestone.

The ferries are accessible by handbike. However, the descent to the ferry is usually very steep on rough cobblestones. Two accompanying persons are usually necessary here.

    Roadbook

From Passau to Schlögener Schlinge, it’s best to stick to the left bank of the Danube. On the right, the terrain is hilly, and the bike path runs right next to a heavily trafficked road. Due to a flat tire, we took the Danube Bus from Schlögener Schlinge to Grafenau, and then again from Ottensheim to Linz. In Untermühl, you have to switch to the right bank, passing through Aschbach until just before Ottensheim, then cross back over to the other side at the lock. From Ottensheim, we’ll take the Danube Bus to Linz; here, the separate bike path is also supposed to run right alongside a heavily trafficked road.

After touring Linz, we continue on the left bank of the Danube. It isn’t until Grein that we take the bike ferry back to the right bank, passing through the very scenic Strudengau region. Our lodging near Melk is on the left bank. To visit Melk, we cross the lock again. Continuing along the right bank, the route becomes very steep as we cross the Danube bridge after Melk. The beautiful towns beyond Melk, such as Weißenburg and Dürnstein, are on the left bank of the Danube. In Krems, we make one final switch to the right bank, where we remain until Vienna. In Vienna, we cycle along the Danube Canal into the city and on to Westbahnhof.
