The Slovenian Drava captivates visitors above all with its scenic beauty and quiet, secluded villages. There is a bike path along this final stretch only in certain sections. In some places, you’ll have to cover short distances on busy roads or unpaved paths—especially in the Slovenian Drau Valley. This stage is therefore not particularly suitable for families with children.

The section between Dravograd and Maribor is one of the most picturesque parts of the Drava Cycle Route in Slovenia. Near Dravograd, the Drava narrows into a forested valley, where the route largely follows the river’s course through a region rich in natural and cultural heritage. A large part of the area is part of the Drava Natura 2000 protected area, which preserves valuable river habitats, riparian forests, and numerous animal species.

In Dravograd, where three valleys and three rivers converge, the old town and the castle ruins—which bear witness to the town’s strategic importance throughout history—are a delight to explore. The bike path continues past Bukovje Castle through the picturesque Drava Valley to Vuzenica, one of the oldest settlements in the valley, which was once known for its rafting and river transport on the Drava.

On the other side of the river lies Muta, home to the Rotunda of St. John the Baptist—one of the oldest churches in Slovenia. An important stop along the route is Radlje ob Dravi, a town between Pohorje and Kozjak, known for its monastic heritage, well-maintained town center, and popular water park on the Drava River.

The route largely follows the course of the Drau River to Podvelka before tackling the only challenging climb in the Slovenian section of the route: over Janževski vrh (Lehen) toward Lovrenc na Pohorju, where the landscape opens up to the tranquil forests of Pohorje and traditional farms. The climb can be bypassed by taking the train on the Podvelka–Fala line, making the stage suitable for cyclists of varying skill levels.

In Fala, the Fala hydroelectric power plant stands out as one of the oldest hydroelectric power plants on the Drava River and an important piece of technical cultural heritage. The route continues to Ruše, a village with a long history on the Drava River and an important starting point for exploring the Pohorje Mountains, which are characterized by cultural traditions, industrial heritage, and proximity to nature reserves.

Before arriving in Maribor, the route passes by the Mariborsko jezero Landscape Park, where the river forms a distinctive aquatic landscape featuring a unique river island. The area is a popular recreational destination and an important natural habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

The stage ends in Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city and the center of the Štajerska wine region. The city is home to the world’s oldest grapevine, which has been growing on the Lend embankment along the Drava River for over 400 years and serves as a symbol of the region’s rich winemaking tradition. Maribor also holds the title of European Best Wine Capital 2026. The city combines a historic center, a vibrant cultural scene, and numerous experiences along the Drava River—from strolls along the Lend to wine and culinary delights.

    From Lavamünd to Dravograd
Here you have two options for reaching Dravograd: Either cycle along the Drau Cycle Route R1 on the left bank of the Drau, with beautiful switchbacks and lovely views of the Drau in the border area just before the national border. There’s also a southern route with a few climbs, especially before Bach. Continue straight through Leifling or Libeliče until you reach Dravograd via Sašnik and Črneče.

    From Dravograd to Vuzenica
If you’d like to take a detour to Dravograd, turn left on the Drau Bridge toward the city center. If you’d rather continue cycling, turn right and follow the unpaved path. The route now climbs again until you cross the railroad tracks. This is followed by an approximately 9-km ride high above the Drau River to Trbonje. Winding up and down constantly, the path snakes along the hillside through a beautiful landscape.

    Trbonje
In the village, turn right onto the main road through town. At the “Out of Town” sign, turn left onto a dirt road. Once again, you’ll cycle constantly uphill and downhill until you reach Darvče. Here, turn left and cycle downhill to Vuzenica.

    From Vuzenica to Podvelka
Stay on the south bank of the Drava, pass through the village, cross the railroad tracks again, and cycle steeply uphill (Caution: 18% grade) until you reach Vuhred. There, turn left onto the main road through town and turn right again before reaching the Drava Bridge. After about 5 km, you’ll reach the train station, where you’ll keep to the right and follow the K3 to Podvelka.

    From Podvelka to Fala
In Podvelka, you’ll come to a paved road and turn right away from the Drava River. What follows is a journey into the Drau hinterland. There are still quite a few inclines to tackle on this section of the route. After about 4 km, you’ll reach Uran, where you’ll also leave the main road to the left and continue cycling toward Lovrenc. At first, the route climbs steeply uphill, then descends for a long stretch. Once you reach the bottom, the road to Lovrenc branches off; continue straight ahead. In Kurjavas, you’ll reach a major road and turn left. Soon after, you’ll arrive at the idyllic little village of Puscava. After passing through the village, turn right and, after another climb and descent, you’ll reach Fala.

    From Fala to Maribor
Now keep to the right and finally ride back down into the Drava Valley via Smolnik and Ruše. Stay on this road until you reach Maribor in about 13 km. A bike path along the new Drava Bridge will take you to the picturesque city center.
