Circular route that develops in the heart of Canavese and has as its strengths the beautiful Lake Candia and the vineyards of the Erbaluce of Caluso.
Circular itinerary that connects the municipalities of Caluso, Vische, Mercenasco, Montalenghe, and Candia Canavese. Mostly flat, it gathers all the few slopes between the municipality of Mercenasco and Lake Candia.
A few km from the start, you pass along the beautiful Lake Candia, immersed in the homonymous Natural Park and surrounded by moraine hills, representing one of the most important wetland areas of Piedmont and included among the Sites of Community Importance under the European Union's "Habitat" Directive.
A few km after Vische you encounter Cascina Luisina, a remarkable example of an ancient rural building with a "closed courtyard" layout, formed by a quadrilateral of about 70 m per side, with a well and a votive chapel at the center, whose shape reproduces a cathedral with three naves, in the central one housing the wooden statue of the Immaculate Madonna.
The municipality of Caluso deserves a visit for its ancient historic center. Here, due to the peculiar composition of the land and the fortunate geographical position, the famous Erbaluce is produced, a grape variety from which the precious D.O.C. wines are obtained, famous on the Italian and international wine market. Viticulture has been practiced in these parts since ancient times and has always been the most prestigious resource of the local agricultural economy. The Regional Wine Cellar of the province of Turin is based in Caluso.
Author’s recommendation
For those who wish, it is possible to complete the full circuit of Lake Candia and the related Natural Park. The surface is 60% unpaved and under the shade of the woods, an easy route but can become complicated when the ground is wet from rain. https://www.piste-ciclabili.com/itinerari/3057-giro-del-lago-di-candia
