    Author’s recommendation

The enjoyable extension: if you still have energy left in your legs, skip the lift and bus on the way back. The approximately 7 km long, almost flat Three-Countries High Trail directly connects the Schöneben top station with Haideralm. It offers outstanding singletrail flow and a postcard-perfect panorama of Lake Resia that simply has to be enjoyed while running!

    Roadbook

Start: top station of Haideralm (St. Valentin auf der Haide).
Ascent: from Haideralm, the trail climbs steadily to Elferspitze (2,926 m). The final ascent to the summit requires some sure-footedness but is easily manageable.
Ridge & descent: from the summit, the route continues over easy and well-walkable boulder terrain via Zwölferkopf.
Final section: the trail descends to Schöneben Hut or the Schöneben top station.
Return: either comfortably by the Schöneben lift down to Reschen and back to St. Valentin by bus – or directly along the wonderful, flat high-altitude trail back to Haideralm.
Note: the tour can also be started in the opposite direction from Schöneben.

    Public transport

Bus connection: the South Tyrolean bus line 273 (Mals–Reschen–Nauders–Landeck) operates regularly and connects the villages of St. Valentin (Haideralm) and Reschen (Schöneben) within a few minutes.

Train: travel with the Vinschgau Railway to the final station in Mals, then continue directly with bus line 273 to the stop at Haideralm in St. Valentin.

    Directions

From the north (A/D): via the Inn Valley Motorway (A12) to Landeck, then continue on the Reschen Federal Road (B180) over the Reschen Pass into South Tyrol and on to St. Valentin auf der Haide (Haideralm valley station).

From the south (I): through the Vinschgau Valley (SS40), following the valley upstream past Mals to St. Valentin auf der Haide.

From the west (CH): via the Engadin (Route 27) to Martina, over the Norbertshöhe Pass to Nauders and then continue over the Reschen Pass to St. Valentin.

    Parking

Free parking is available directly at the valley stations of Haideralm (St. Valentin) and the Schöneben lift (Reschen). As both locations are perfectly connected, it does not matter at which of the two valley stations the car is parked.

    Equipment

Footwear: trail running shoes with a grippy treaded sole for the alpine boulder terrain on Elferspitze.

Clothing: functional, windproof and weather-resistant clothing (running vest/light jacket), as it is often windy along the summit ridge.

Nutrition: sufficient fluids (running vest or trail backpack) as well as bars or gels to cover energy needs during the run.

Safety: smartphone with offline map/GPS, a small first-aid kit (including an emergency blanket). Trail running poles are highly recommended for the ascent to Elferspitze.
