You get the toughest section out of the way at the beginning of the Sandgrueb Trail. After that, it's just a matter of enjoying the view of Pfäfers, the Falknis, and the surrounding mountains!

The Outdoor Fitness Trails in the Heidiland holiday region include over 30 uniformly signposted running paths from a total of 10 stations, forming one of the largest outdoor fitness parks in the Alpine region. The Sandgrueb Trail is one of three running routes around the Valens station.

The starting point for this 4.2 km trail is the Infopoint of the Valens station at the postbus station of the Valens clinic (915 m above sea level). All three trails first pass the school, mini-golf course, church, and shop before ascending to the road that leads to Vasön. Shortly after reaching the main road, the trail turns right onto a narrow hiking trail. After only a few meters, the trail again turns right—this time onto a paved road, which offers a magnificent view over the village of Valens, the neighboring community of Pfäfers, and the Falknis. At Rieteren (1019 m), you have already reached the highest point of the trail. From here, the Sandgrueb Trail mostly runs through a forest and along a well-developed forest path almost straight ahead to the Zanuxtobel. At the various forest clearings, there are always beautiful views of Pfäfers and the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching the Zanuxtobel, the partly steep descent begins through the forest and over pastures to Sandgrueb (905 m). The last section back to the Infopoint in Valens runs along the sidewalk of the road connecting Bad Ragaz with Valens.

    Author’s recommendation

The Outdoor Fitness Trails mostly run on official hiking trails. For orientation on the way, the hiking trail signage is helpful.

Relax after your sporting effort in the public thermal bath of the Valens clinic, where you can bathe in the famous Bad Ragaz healing water.
